Since these dams were built, salmon runs have plummeted. Congress agreed to develop strategies to mitigate the destruction but never succeeded. My own students have raised chinook salmon in our classroom each year for many years rearing them from egg to fry, learning about their habitat requirements, water chemistry and the ecological importance of salmon. Salmon reflect the health of our environment and their journey -against all odds - to come back to their natal rivers to spawn after years at sea teaches all of us about resilience, perseverance, grace, interdependence, and reciprocity. Salmon are iconic to our part of the world. Their life history is woven intimately into the fabric of indigenous culture and modern history and economy. The forests of the Pacific Northwest are intimately tied to the nutrients delivered from the sea to the land by the bodies of salmon. Bears, eagles, osprey, songbirds, and a myriad of other animals rely on salmon. Without salmon, the fisheries that have sustained hundreds of thousands of jobs in this region collapse. Without salmon, our resident orcas, unique in diet and dialect, continue to starve, fail to reproduce, and proceed into the oblivion of extinction. Dams were good ideas people had many years ago to provide power that was cleaner than coal but they failed to understand their impacts on the environment in so many other ways, ways we understand now. Their cost to us now and to future generations is incalculable if we to fail to use what we know now to undo the damage of the past half century and take down the worst offenders. We have a chance, a fleeting chance, to save our salmon and orcas. If we don´t act now to breach the dams on the Lower Snake, we damn ourselves and our children to a future bereft of wild salmon and orcas.
ERIN supported: Save the Southern Resident Orcas & Wild Salmon by removing the 4 Lower Snake River Dams
These dams are cutting off valuable salmon habitat. Without salmon all our Washington ecosystems will collapse. If these dams can be removed why not remove them for the sake of salmon?

These dams are no longer profitable, and the negatives outweigh the positives now. It's time to take a step to truly help our struggling southern resident population. They are too precious and iconic to lose!
