I was devastated to hear that the IB program was cut for LISD. At first I assumed that must be happening across the state, but instead found out that only Leander ISD has made this unfortunate decision. One of the top reasons we moved into the neighborhood we live in, was that our elementary school is IB. It never occurred to me that a program that distinguished would be removed. Additionally, I am even more disturbed that it has been pulled from our local high school as well. Two days before the announcement came, I had signed up to attend the first parent meeting to learn more about how my incoming freshman can begin the process of moving through the IB system in high school. What a disservice to all the students who previously had the option to have this distinction on their high school resume, and now no longer even have the possibility of standing out from other schools. All while other districts are still providing this “step-up” for their students, we have now taken this critical addition to our schools, away. To say that I am disappointed in our district is an understatement.

Throughout my years in school, I've heard many great things about the IB program from people all over the world, including multiple European countries and China. When I was younger, my family moved to America to in order to offer my brother and I a great educational opportunity, which we felt we would find with the IB program in LeanderISD. It is very disappointing that the district has decided to end the IB program just as I and many other eager students were about to begin, especially while they had promoted the program and reached out to many of us to join prior to the removal of it. This sudden and unexpected decision will not only affect the final years of high school for many students, but also their college careers. It will also deeply impact many teachers, the younger generations, and the overall future of our community. Countless people have made accommodations, sacrifices, etc. to be able to join the IBDP, however I feel that the district is failing to acknowledge the efforts of the families that put the education of their children and the future first. While budget cuts are understandable, it is not understandable how the district will spend money on things that people do not need and expect no consequence. I sincerely wish that the district will reconsider their decisions, and acknowledge its own students. Our education should not be limited because of budget cuts, but instead be nurtured and cared for in order to shape our futures.

I specifically moved to this area for the IB program because I know firsthand the incredible impact it can have. Having gone through the IB program myself, I had access to an exceptional education that leveled the playing field, allowing me to compete with students from private schools and wealthier districts—an opportunity that was especially meaningful growing up in a low-income area. I was excited to provide this same opportunity for my children, and it’s truly disappointing to see such a valuable program being cut.

Defunding public education is disgusting, unethical, and unconstitutional. Everyone has a right to education, and it shouldn’t be taken away from those kids who are our future.

I have been exposed to the IB program for over 5 years in Malaysia and have moved to Vandegrfit High school because of their IB programs. It is very upsetting and frustrating to see that the school is cutting budget by reducing academic opportunities for students. I believe that the school needs to have a consistent focus on improving their student's experience in learning, rather than other extra-curricular and activities. IBDP is a very precious program which is not widely available, but the district deciding on cutting their budget by limiting this important opportunities for students is very troubling. I wish that the district understand our view and dedication to the IB program and reconsiders their decisions on the means to cut their budgets. I really wish that the school keeps to improve student's academic opportunities and save the IBDP.

Having graduated from a Middle Years Program (2003) and then continuing through to receive my IB diploma in 2007, I spent many years in the curriculum developed by the International Baccalaureate Program. I deeply value the academic rigor of the education in not only math and science but in the arts, social sciences and languages. This is such a valuable approach to teaching our children to become innovative and criticical thinkers not just rote test takers. The International recognition of this program and college admission / acceptance is top tier, it's concerning LISD would remove such an opportunity from our students to no longer be competitive and disadvantaged them in this way. We bought our home in an LISD feeder pattern high school that has an IB program SPECIFICALLY because we know the many benefits this program brings to a school and high level teachers and programs. It's plainly absurd the LISD Board is putting on full display they do not truly value progress, innovation, academic success or their student's futures.

As a parent of two IB Diploma graduates in Austin ISD, I know what a challenging and rewarding program it is. Our state legislators are failing to support our public schools, which already offer so many great choices to all Texans. IB prepared my kids, not only for college work, but also for lifelong learning, critical thinking, and productive contributions to their communities.

I moved to Texas from Canada specifically to attend Vandegrift because of the IB program and French - I've been planning to take IB for over 6 years, and the fact that they cut the program right before our courses are due is really upsetting. They've been thinking about cutting it for a while but couldn't take the time to send out an email warning us? There's no time to look into dual credit as the applications opened last week, and AP capstone doesn't focus as much on learning the content as it does memorizing facts to score highly on the AP exam. I can't believe that we're prioritizing fireworks at football games over a globally recognized academic program, which is the reason many students at Vandegrift are here in the first place. Insane.
