Replace Junk Food with Healthier Options in Leander ISD Cafeterias

Replace Junk Food with Healthier Options in Leander ISD Cafeterias

The Issue

As a concerned parent of three children attending schools in Steiner Ranch, I am deeply concerned about the nutritional value of the snack food served in our school cafeterias. Our children are being offered junk food options that contribute to unhealthy eating habits and potential long-term health issues.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), childhood obesity has tripled since the 1970s and it's largely due to unhealthy food choices. Moreover, research from Harvard University shows that students who eat a healthy diet perform better academically than those who don't.

Our schools should be places where our children learn not just academically but also about their health. They should promote good eating habits that will stay with them throughout their lives. By replacing junk food with healthier options on school menus, we can help combat childhood obesity and encourage healthier lifestyles for our kids.

The LISD team of nutritionalists, who select these junk food items, are actually employed by the very company (SFE) who sells the junk food to LISD. This seems to be a direct conflict of interest. Here is list of some of these junk food items: chips, pop tarts, cookies, Rice crispy bar, multiple ice creams, scooby snacks, capri sun, chat snacks and more.

Join me in urging the LISD board to take immediate action on this matter. Let's ensure our kids get nutritious meals at school so they can grow up healthy and strong. Please sign this petition today and share with your friends and family.

The School Health Advisory Committee meets 4 times a year to review and discuss the menu, and the next meeting is scheduled for February 12th 2024. More information: https://www.leanderisd.org/schoolhealthadvisorycommittee/
