Consent is one of the most critical components of medicine. Someone with so little respect for another person’s autonomy should never gain the power to take that away from them.
We teach people every day what we will accept as a society through what we choose to and not to allow. Until rapists are treated like the criminals they are men will never stop hurting women. Women will never be safe until the men that harm us see ACTUAL consequences. His life might be ruined? What about the life of the woman he raped? What about the future he took? Our government claims to care about the safety of women so as a woman I say: PROVE IT.
So someone can now be guilty of rape and then continue on to be a doctor of women’s sexual organs??? The only place this person should ever see again is the inside of a prison cell. Shame on the judge, would she visit a rapist gynecologist? I doubt it, so why should anyone else especially without knowledge that their doctor has previously raped a woman and is now constantly around undressed women for private appointments. How abhorrent.
During cancer care I had to do a lot of work with a gynaecologist.
I needed to have a lot of trust in my doctor.
But now I hear this- not only could a rapist walk free, but he aims to become a gynaecologist.
Suddenly that trust is broken for me, and for women everywhere.
Women should be able to feel safe in a healthcare environment.
Women deserve to feel safe ALWAYS.
Deciding that he shouldn't feel the consequences of his own actions because he could have a bright future?
You know who else has a bright future?
The traumatised woman that he raped AND every single future woman that he could potentially work with and interfere with as a gynaecologist- a doctor who specialises in reproductive/SEXUAL organs!
How disgraceful it is that people would let that man walk free.
You want women to trust men?
Well, start with the ones who are in a position to make the world a safer place for women, but ignore it to support literal rapists, abusers, and predators.... CRIMINALS.
Why. Why are we still coddling theses men, and treating women like dirt.
Retrial.
Women deserve to feel safe.
First Do No Harm is a fundamental principle in healthcare and medicine. I posit that a man who sexually assaults a woman is, at his core, unable to understand that concept. Sexual assault very much harms women both physically and mentally, and yet you want to set a predator loose on gynecological patients. You are literally serving victims up to him on a silver platter. If he is incapable of controlling himself before obtaining his medical license, that degree will not make him a better man with a conscience. I hope those that refuse to punish him will be able to sleep at night when all of his future victims come forward.
It raises deep concern as to why this self acclaimed rapist has chosen Gynaecology as a career. If he is allowed to continue in this field further incidents of SA will be guaranteed as he has already gotten away with it once before. As a patient currently under Urogynaecology I find this deeply disturbing.
How can someone's “career”, in which the criminalistic “motive, opportunity, means” interplay has just been perfected, be weighted higher than the consequences for the woman who has to SURVIVE rape in terms of all the trauma disorders, the social and financial consequences - in all probability for life!!!! Absolute misjudgment, technically and ethically simply incompetent.
Nevermind how unbelievably hard it is in this current climate to get a conviction for rape - you have to have the bravery to report in first place, knowing it's highly likely you won't be believed. Going through the whole court case having to relive those moments, feeling violated once more by the questions designed to show you are culpable. Nevermind that in the UK last year (I imagine it's similar for Belgium) only about 2% of rapists were convicted. She did that. She managed to prove, against all odds he did this. But then this... His career (which would give him further access to rape and SA women) being prioritised over her trauma, which will probably impact on her career. No, no, and no. He needs to be fully held to account, his name widely circulated (many on social media not daring to) and he should never be allowed to change it, or work in any profession that gives him access to intimate parts of anyone's body.
