As a former student of Campbell High School, I am heartbroken and outraged hearing of the wrongful termination of Coach James Gwyn and Coach Randy McClure. These two coaches have dedicated over 70 years combined to shaping the lives of countless students, not only as athletes but as individuals. Their commitment to excellence both on and off the court has left an undeniable legacy. The fact that the gym was renamed in their honor speaks volumes about the impact they’ve had on their students, the school, and the community. To remove them now, especially after all they’ve contributed, feels not only unjust but disrespectful to their decades of service and the countless lives they’ve touched. They deserve honor and recognition for their dedication as not only teachers and coaches but for being mentors, role models, and selfless supporters of the community. I stand with Coach Gwyn and Coach McClure and urge the decision-makers to reconsider this unbelievably unjust termination.

While I never had the chance to meet Coach Gwynn, Coach McClure profoundly impacted my life. Their influence on countless students is immeasurable, with many passing through their classrooms and onto their courts. I can wholeheartedly affirm that their guidance has transformed lives.
Although I never engaged in sports, Coach McClure served as my mentor in the classroom. He believed in every one of his students, regardless of our backgrounds, treating us with unwavering respect. We felt valued and empowered to pursue our dreams. Because of him, I found the confidence to attend college and enroll in challenging science classes, overcoming fears I had about Anatomy & Physiology and Biology after working as his teacher's aide in that small office filled with glass jars of specimens back in the early '90s.
The legacy these coaches have created in the lives of their students is both profound and lasting, and they deserve recognition, not the treatment they received from my alma mater. It is disappointing that after decades of dedicated service to the Smyrna community, the Campbell administration would act in such a manner. Shame on you, Campbell, for abandoning the high standards you once championed. It’s time to honor those who have done so much for our students and community.

They have been monumental in the lives of so many. Thankful to have had them both as stand up men and father figures away from home while in high school. They deserve to be treated fairly and with the same love they have sown into the community. It takes a village, they are and have been apart of that village for decades.

I had the privilege of playing for Coach Gwynn, and his coaching, both on and off the court, played a pivotal role in shaping me into the person I am today. His guidance not only helped me excel in basketball but also instilled values that allowed me to thrive in my career as a Division I athlete and later as a successful entrepreneur in the real estate sector. The impact these men have had on the lives of their players cannot be overstated.
For these reasons, I call for the immediate resignation of the principal and athletic director, who are responsible for this unjust decision. Their actions are not only a disservice to these coaches but also to the entire community. It is time for the leadership of Campbell High School to be held accountable. These two men deserve their jobs back, and the individuals responsible for their wrongful termination should step down from their positions.
Coach Gwynn and Coach McClure have given their hearts and souls to this community. They are far more than coaches—they are mentors, role models, and pillars of the Smyrna area. To remove them is an affront to all they have done for Campbell High School and the athletes they have helped develop.
It is my hope that the decision can be reversed, and justice can be served.

These actions do not reflect the values of the Smyrna in which I was raised. It is quite surprising and shameful given the well-documented need for strong, supportive communities for teenagers' mental and emotional health.

Probably seen a good 90%, home/away games, so l think I'm qualified in my observation and opinion of these two men. Coach Mcclure and Coach Gwyn are the EPITOME of who you want coaching and teaching your child! They exemplify this by being a good role model and coach. THEY REALLY CARE ABOUT THEIR PLAYERS AND STUDENTS! As coaches, the teaching of fundamentals, discipline and teamwork are instilled in their player's to achieve their highest potential. A great start in preparing them for life! The players represent close to 3000 students. THEY ARE CAMPBELL! Both coaches have shown their expertise in coaching, year in and year out. THEY DON'T RECRUIT, DON'T HAVE TOO! A mark of not only a great person, but great coach! They know how to take the players, who are home grown coming up through the lower programs and develop a team and be successful at it! BOTH OF THEIR RECORDS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES! As being pillars of our CAMPBELL family and their dedication to the school, CAMPBELL'S new gym was named for both, GWYN MCCLURE GYMNASIUM! A very rare and high honor, most deserving to both! One can only have high praise for them in what they done and accomplished! How fortunate CAMPBELL is to not only have one, but two coaches of high caliber! It is hoped that Coach Mcclure and Coach Gwyn can continue at CAMPBELL and finish out their most distinguished careers! THANK YOU BOTH FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS AND CARING!
