Domestic Violence

Domestic violence refers to abusive behaviors by one partner against another in an intimate relationship, including physical, emotional, psychological, or sexual abuse. It can affect people regardless of age, gender, or background, and often involves patterns of control and coercion.

Survivors sometimes experience difficulties accessing emergency services like 911, especially from multi-line telephone systems where direct connection can be complicated. These challenges can delay timely intervention and increase risk to the survivor's safety.

In some cases, victims of domestic violence may face criminalization themselves due to circumstances such as self-defense claims or misunderstandings of the abuse. This can deter survivors from seeking help and complicates their access to justice and support.

'Corrective rape' is a form of sexual violence targeted primarily at LGBTQ+ individuals, intended to change or punish their sexual orientation or gender identity. These cases represent a severe and specific abuse within the broader issue of domestic violence and require focused protective and legal measures.
