We can no longer pretend that we are living in a Democratic Republic when people are being snatched off the street and deported without due process. In a few short months we've become the very kind of country we used to condemn.

This is the 21st century, for God's sake. How can anyone honestly believe that a person or group's protection depends on the silencing and disappearance of someone else? This is how absolute monarchies used to behave. Don't we believe in democracy anymore?

Kristi Noem has done irreparable damage to minorities in the entire country as well as in South Dakota. South Dakota has the highest rate of depression in LGBTQ+ youth, partially due to her actions. She ran her campaign to be governor her first term with strong anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric. She also attacks the rights of trans individuals at every opportunity she can. All of this on top of all the other controversies listed in the petition and other signees. Awarding her an honorary degree is endorsing her actions, policies, corruption, etc and betraying the large LGBTQ+ and other minority population that DSU holds. If DSU has any respect for its minority faculty and students, it will rescind this offer.

As someone born and raised in South Dakota, I'm astounded that DSU would discard their values in this way. As an institution of higher learning, DSU should be seeking to give their graduates an example of someone who lives the values of truth and humanitarianism. Kristi Noem has shown several times over she is the antithesis of that. South Dakotans care for our neighbors, and Kristi Noem does not.

As someone who grew up in SD, and has personally met Noem, she is not someone that we should be honoring in anyway. She has done so much to damage the lives of minorities in SD and has ran her campaigns on hatred. Your students deserve to hear a speech from someone who cares about future generations and minority groups, someone who will uplift and inspire you students and graduates to lead America into a better, brighter and more inclusive future. Noem is NOT that person.

I am opposed to Kristi Noem being the speaker at DSU's graduation as well as her receiving a honorary degree from the institution due to her unethical behavior as SD Govenor. While Govenor of SD, Kristi promoted her own family and agenda, no big surprise there! She also did it while trying to hide it from the general public- government is supposed to have some transperancy, as Govenor, Kristi did not. Also, Kristi used state apporved transportation to further the Republican agenda, not neccessarily working for the good of SD. She also left the tab to be picked up by the state of SD residents instead of the National Republican party. I also am opposed to Kristi speaking at DSU's graduation for her disreguard of basic human values. She has taken her new role as Sec. of Homeland Security to a whole new level of targeting people of vulernable groups, and enjoying it as well!. She has in the past spouted her Christian values but is living a life of hipocracy. She is rounding up and aiding in the rounding up of people of color, denying them their rights to defend themselves, to face their accussors and have due process played out for them. DSU has a good number of international students, will they feel safe to partake in their graduation ceremonies? Will ICE agents be coming with Kristi to speak? And how many students, that have worked hard for their education, have earned the right to receive their degree will lose out on their family members being there to celebrate with them as they graduate, if Kristi is to receive her honorary degree? When she received her degree from SDSU- students and their families lost allotted seats for family members, because Kristi took more than her share of allotted seats- again, she takes what she doesn't earn! (I know that I am more sensitive to this last comment, because I too lost my dad- when I was 18. My brother, my mother & I all kept the family farm going even while we were in three different colleges and universities at the time. We came home each weekend and got a week's worth of farm work done before going back to school. My mom & I were undergrads and my brother was in Vet school. You can ACTUALLY do it, go to school, graduate with honors and save the family farm!)

I graduated from DSU twenty-some years, and more recently, my daughter joined me as a DSU alumna. DSU pride runs deep in our house! However, this decision is deeply concerning to me. Regardless of your opinion on Noem, she is objectively a highly polarizing and divisive figure. Graduations are often the epitome of a young adult's life. They are supposed to be celebratory, inclusive, and inspirational. Purposely choosing a commencement speaker whose presence will undoubtedly alienate and offend a large number of graduates, and their friends and family does not facilitate the kind of atmosphere a public learning institution should seek to provide. Then, to give her an honor in front of students who are representative of the very groups she is unconstitutionally attacking with her anti-inmigration vendetta is tone-deaf at best, if not outright unnecessarily callous.

I grew up in Madison, SD and proudly taught at DSU fro 17 years. From the depth of my being, I object to awarding an honorary degree to Noem. She has shown herself to be cruel, ineffective, and unAmerican. This honorary degree is a travesty.

Inviting Kristi Noem to be the commencement speaker at DSU, as well as potentially offering an honorary doctorate, sends a message to DSU students that they and their voices don't matter. As a veteran, I fought for the right of every American, and our students deserve better than what this administration is doing to them. Don't take this day away from the hard working graduates, rescind Noem's invitation.
