I was a Cougar fan before I was in the BYU pep band (now an alumna of both). It breaks my heart for them to be at odds. I was watching the Baylor game last night, and it soured my experience watching the team knowing a little of this situation. My impression is that Athletics is making a silly egotistical stance to try to force the band into commission of their view on schedule. Consistency of game experience is the excuse noted in the ksl article— if people wanted such consistency you would have the exact same script and competitions at every single game. Please stop hiding behind that excuse and make this right.

As a former member of the BYU music program and band member, I can attest to the great value that the band brings in support, and encouragement to both the players, and the fans. This is a valued tradition that needs to continue for both the benefit of the sports, as well as the opportunity for the musicians to share their talents, and joy of the gameday environment.

As a former high school and college athlete, I LOVED having a pep band to set the tone and get the crowd hyped at my sporting events. Why BYU would even consider this move I haven't the slightest idea. Let the band play! Athletes, spectators (both student and otherwise), and the musicians themselves deserve to keep this tradition going!

Music is an important tradition that unites student athletic communities and gives student musicians the ability to connect, play, and contribute to their school. Football shouldn’t be the only sport that gets live music, pep band has a beloved spot in basketball as well.

I don't live close enough to attend games in person, but I have noticed the lack of a live pep band at games watching on TV, and it stands out in a bad way. The pep band is a big part of what makes the college atmosphere so special. Playing music over the loudspeaker makes it sound like a stale NBA game. Please let the band play.

I’m a member of the Pep Band at a fellow Big 12 school; not only is this upsetting for the band members, it sets a dangerous precedent for college sports as a whole. With college sports trying more and more to be a minor league for the pros, things like pep bands are the only thing that sets the sport apart from just being another major league.

Music is always one of the first things cut when it comes to budgets and one of the last things when listing “importance”. All subjects are important: math, science, sports, art AND YES - MUSIC! Obviously this cancellation of the band was not ok’d through proper lines of authority because there were try outs for this band, a class put in the main schedule for the members to sign up for, and scholarships passed out. Marketing is sending a big message that money and sports are top priority and not music majors, or tradition or a well-rounded education. Very disappointed in my alma mater. I KNOW they can do better.

I’m an alumni of an SEC pep band. Pep band was one of the best experiences of my life, and I was so proud to help represent and support my school in our athletic games. Live pep bands truly help the culture of a game and are important. Traditional band songs relevant to the history of the school can help lift the spirit of the fans and players during hard moments or heighten a huge moment. Band kids themselves are some of the most invested in the sports of the school, being tied to directly to them. We add another 50-150 voices to lead cheers and make every game memorable through our music, cheers, excitement, and even helping to heckle the other team. Please don’t make the mistake of cutting this program.
