Petition to Mayor Ruthanne Fuller, Newton City Council

Newton South High School Students Urge to Stop Gun Stores in Newton

Dear Mayor Fuller and Members of the Council, We, the students of Newton South, are writing to convey our deep anxiety about the planned opening of a firearm store in our city. Newton has long been seen as one of the safest cities in the United States, and many families make an effort to move here for that exact reason. A firearm store in our city would put its students, families, and other residents in danger of being another tragedy to gun violence. We implore you to do everything in your power—such as passing a strict zoning ordinance—to protect our community’s safety and wellbeing. Newton is home to twenty-one K-12 public schools, with 12,611 students enrolled (NPS ‘Our Schools’). Having a gun shop in our city will make it easier for anyone to obtain a firearm and use it to enact violence at a school, regardless of how close that school is to the store. However, of the twenty-one schools, five (Newton North High School, F.A. Day Middle School, Cabot, Horace Mann, and Lincoln-Eliot Elementary School) are within a one-mile radius of the proposed firearm store location; this further increases the ease at which one of these schools could experience a gun-related incident.  Students are already reminded of the very imminent threat of gun violence at their schools every day. We have been put through active shooter drills at least once a year, in every class, since elementary school; we seek out areas in which to hide whenever we enter a new classroom; we take our phones with us when we go to the bathroom, just in case we need to text our parents if something happens; and, we have seen our peers around the United States be murdered ruthlessly in their schools time after time. Allowing a gun store to open in Newton has tangible detriments to our city’s safety. Since the start of the pandemic, there has been a record surge in gun sales in America. Critically, the University of California Firearm Violence Research Center found in 2020 that there was an association between this rapid boost in sales and shootings. Opening a gun store in Newton only opens the possibility of a tragedy—like the recent event in Colorado—occurring in our community. Moreover, the legal hurdles for gun purchases aren’t enough to prevent gun violence—the New York Times studied 19 mass shootings and found that the firearms used were bought legally with a federal background check in the vast majority of instances. Further, the FBI studied dozens of active shooting incidents between 2000 and 2013 and found that 98% of the active shooters purchased firearms legally. Given the context that to date, there has been at least one mass shooting every day in 2021, and 2020 saw an unprecedented number of mass shootings; the last thing Newton should be doing is inviting guns into our community.  Our city and local government should be taking measures to ensure our safety rather than creating easier access to weapons and seemingly turning their backs on Newton’s students. We’ve valued immensely the safety we, as Newton students, have grown up in, and we hope that you will do everything in your power to maintain this for the next generations of Newton students.

Petition to Christopher Wray, Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke, FBI Deputy Director

Declare the NRA a supporter of domestic terrorism

The National Rifle Association (NRA) is more a political lobby than sportsmen's organization. It has spent over $3 million per year since 2013 to keep gun policies in an antiquated state despite the fact that  more Americans have died from gun violence (over 1.5 million) than from all the wars since the Revolution, and now want some form of gun control. A sensible reading of the 2nd Amendment would restrict purchase of equipment designed for mass murder: large clips, military grade semi-and fully automatic rifles, and ammunition for the same, which could be as easily tracked as over-the-counter medication. Yet none of it will be regulated while the NRA effectively controls the GOP. While not a branch of government, the NRA has enormous impact on American life by coercing politicians and voters with money and intimidation, and restricting our safety and public health.  Former NRA CEO and multi-millionaire Wayne LaPierre has said that "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." As at Stoneman Douglas High, where three or four armed deputies waited outside during the shooting, this is rarely true and unfortunately doesn't help the shooter's victims. In Las Vegas, where over 500 people were shot with automatic gunfire, the shooter was inaccessible and shot himself before police arrived. In the wake of these horrific attacks the NRA mobilizes to enrich gun and ammo manufacturers while putting Americans at increasing risk of being shot.  Domestic terrorism continues to rise in Trump era. White nationalist groups were eager to claim the shooter in Parkland as one of their own. The NRA facilitates both the arming and the militant ideology of these groups, supporting domestic terrorism. While right-wing politicians divert or attention with imagined threats from immigrants, the NRA does real harm to democracy, spreading anti-government hysteria and the idea of armed insurrection. FBI director Wray recently testified regarding the danger of armed, right-wing extremism amid growing white nationalism. The FBI should stop hesitating and brand the NRA for its leading role in providing cover for this disease.  The victims of Santa Fe High (TX), Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, Fl), Sutherland Springs (11/5/17), Las Vegas (10/2/17), the  2016 Orlando shooting, Sandy Hook Elementary, Tree of Life Synagogue, Dayton, El Paso, Santa Clarita (11/14/19) and on and on deserve no less.  Please sign the petition, another petition seeking to designate the NRA a terrorist organization under the Patriot Act, and support the Violence Policy Center.

Ban Assault Weapons

All of the deadliest mass shootings that have happened have all involved one thing: assault weapons. Thousands of people have died to the hands of assault rifles, and as President Biden stated, “There’s no reason somebody needs a weapon of war with 100 rounds in a magazine.” Columbine shooting: 15 deaths Sandy Hook shooting: 26 deaths (20 were children) As of April, 2021, there have been 45 mass shootings. Enforcing a ban on assault weapons would greatly reduce the number of deaths that would occur in mass shootings. The fear in America would not be as great, children could go to school with less worry, and people would not have to be as wary of others. This deadly weapon affects everyone and does not discriminate. Please think about how many lives this could save. Ban assault weapons NOW.

Petition to Philadelphia Police Department, Commissioner Outlaw

Tell Philadelphia Police: The NRA has no place educating our children.

UPDATE: Victory! The Philadelphia Police Departmenthas agreed to pull the NRA's ineffective gun education program for children and seek alternate, proven solutions. Help us keep up the pressure to fund community-based gun safety programs by supporting CeaseFirePA. Philadelphia Police just announced they’re bringing the NRA’s Eddie Eagle gun safety program to Philadelphia. Yes, the NRA. The same group that has spent years fighting against gun safety not just in Philadelphia, but across Pennsylvania.  Yesterday Police Commissioner Outlaw announced a partnership with the NRA to provide gun safety education to children. Their “Eddie Eagle” program is designed to teach children what to do when they encounter a firearm and has been touted by the NRA as the alternative to common-sense gun legislation. The NRA is in no position to engage with kids on gun violence prevention. And it’s not just that it’s an NRA program — pediatric research has shown it isn’t even effective. Ultimately, the responsibility to practice gun safety shouldn’t fall on kindergarteners. But until we implement proven solutions at curbing gun violence like safe storage and background checks, these programs are needed. That doesn’t mean we should be handing kids NRA coloring books. Gun education and safety are critical. Propping up the gun lobby is not. Tell Philadelphia Police to end their partnership with the NRA. For more information, check out our website:
