    Petition to Social Security Administration

Add Narcolepsy as a qualifying condition to The Social Security Blue Book

Please sign this petition to list Narcolepsy as a qualified disabling condition in the Social Security Blue Book. Why should Narcolepsy be listed among the list of conditions in the Social Security Blue Book? Narcolepsy is a condition that adversely affects functions of everyday life. It is very misunderstood but it's effects are far reaching. It is incurable and it takes many Narcoleptics years before they can find the right combination of medications to become semi-functional. It is physically and mentally debilitating. The missing Orexins, now believed to be one of the main precursors for Narcolepsy, not only affect the sleep /wake cycle, but things like metabolism, gastrointestinal functioning and cognitive functioning as well. Many PWN struggle daily putting their health, mental state and even lives at risk at times. Many go from job to job because it is impossible to maintain stable employment with any given employer for lengthy periods. Because many persons with Narcolepsy, or PWN as it is often abbreviated, have difficulty maintaining employment for long periods, it is nearly impossible to advance, maintain seniority or keep a job long enough to manage a decent pay raise to reach a livable salary. Few people know what narcolepsy is. Of those few, many see it as just a sleep disorder in which the person with the condition sleeps more than the average person. This is incorrect. Narcolepsy impacts other important physiological functions. What is Narcolepsy? In a healthy brain there is a small population of specialized cells in the hypothalamus called orexin neurons. These orexin neurons produce a neuropeptide called orexin. Orexin acts as a neurotransmitter. It's primary function appears to be arousal (regulation of the sleep/wake cycle), food seeking and appetite. When, through a process which is not yet confirmed but is suspected to be autoimmune in nature these orexin neurons are either completely or partially killed off, orexin becomes unavailable or its availability becomes severely reduced. The result is that the transmission of neural messages done by orexin, called orexinergic signaling, is unavailable or drastically limited. When that happens, several very clearly identifiable physical symptoms become manifest in a person. That group of symptoms is what we call narcolepsy. Orexin directly regulates or is involved in the regulation of serotonin, adrenaline, histamine, dopamine, acetylcholine, norepinephrine, GABA and glutamine, among others. When there isn't enough orexin these other systems become dysregulated and fail, causing the further dysregulation of other systems. These are what are known as cascading failures. One of the most important points to understand about narcolepsy is one that escapes most people, including many physicians. It is this: when orexinergic signaling is absent or insufficient, other things go wrong in the body that manifest themselves in ways that appear to be unrelated to narcolepsy. Insufficient or unavailable orexinergic signaling results in the dysregulation of a wide range of processes throughout the body such as the autonomic and sympathetic nervous systems (breathing, blood pressure and heart rate regulation, intestinal motility, homeostasis, etc.) executive function and cognition, olfactory perception, motivation, arousal and feeding, sex drive, psychological processes such as mood, and of course the sleep wake cycle, to name just a few. Narcolepsy used to be known as a sleep disorder because the night time sleep of narcoleptics is interrupted, resulting in a lack of restful or restorative sleep. However, narcolepsy was recently reclassified as neurological disorder, with Type 1 narcolepsy (with cataplexy) occurring in 65-70% of patients. Most of the remaining sufferers fall into the category of Type 2 narcolepsy (without cataplexy). The ADA, or Americans With Disabilities Act, defines a person with a disability as “a person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity." Narcolepsy is a rare, chronic illness that substantially impacts multiple life activities. It is a neurological sleep disorder where the brain is no longer able to properly control the sleep/wake cycle. Because the brain does not follow the normal sleep cycle, the physical and cognitive abilities of a person with Narcolepsy are continuously impaired. In order for a person without Narcolepsy to experience an "everyday tired" for someone with Narcolepsy, they would literally have to stay awake 48 to 72 hours. That is 48 to 72 hours with no sleep. Sleep is the most important function of the body. A person can survive longer without food than they can without sleep. Sleep is necessary for the body to restore and heal itself. Sleep is necessary to fight off disease. Anyone who has ever pulled an all-nighter or two for a test or to finish a project has experienced that slow, groggy feeling you get when you haven't had enough sleep. Anyone who has had to pull over to rest during a long distance drive has experienced the slowing of reflexes that can't be avoided when you are extremely sleepy. People who suffer from Narcolepsy are often at risk of falling asleep at inopportune and even dangerous times. Many suffer from Cataplexy (sudden muscle weakness), Hypnagogic & Hypnopompic Hallucinations (upon falling asleep and upon waking), and Sleep Paralysis; in addition to debilitating Excessive Daytime Sleepiness. Because it is a neurological sleep disorder, the effects are both physical and cognitive. Despite all of these substantial limitations on major life activities, Narcolepsy is not specifically listed in the Social Security Blue Book as a qualified disability. The Blue Book is the Social Security Administration's complete listing of impairments used to determine disability benefits. There are many people with Narcolepsy who are struggling, going from job to job trying to survive. They are putting their health and sometimes their lives at risk, forcing themselves to work beyond limitations. These are everyday tasks most take for granted. There is a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation regarding Narcolepsy. I am listing some pertinent facts as to illustrate the effects of Narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is a lifelong chronic illness which has no cure Although there are treatments to help aid with the symptoms of Narcolepsy, there is no one proven method. It may take a person with Narcolepsy as much as several years to find the right combination of medications in order to function at just a partially normal level. It can take an average of 10-15 years for a PWN (Person with Narcolepsy) to be correctly diagnosed. Narcolepsy can impact nearly every aspect of your life. It is dangerous because you can have excessive sleepiness or a sleep attack at any time of the day, in the middle of any activity including eating, walking or driving. Operating a vehicle with untreated narcolepsy can be very dangerous and some states even have laws against it Cataplexy is a sudden and transient episode of muscle weakness accompanied by full conscious awareness, typically triggered by emotions. Laughing, crying, terror, stress, and anxiety are a few examples of such emotions. Many people believe because they are frequently tired, it is the same as Narcolepsy. This is not the case. PWN are pathologically "sleepy", not just tired. This means that, while a person with Narcolepsy does not necessarily sleep more or less than a person without Narcolepsy, they will experience an almost, if not completely, uncontrollable need to fall asleep most times. For more information on Narcolepsy here are some websites: www.moreawake.com www.narcolepsynetwork.org http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/narcolepsy/narcolepsy.htm

Petition to Australian Government, Australian Immigration

    AUPAIR QUALIFYING AUSTRALIA VISA EXTENSIONS

As a Working Holiday Visa Holder (417), it is required that 88 days/3 months of Regional, Rural, and Specified work must be completed within our 12 month Visa entry. Although I do find this task quite admirable and enriching, by allowing foreigners to give back to the Australian Community, I do find it unbelievably difficult to complete, as COVID-19 has made the economy exponentially plummet. Unemployment rates have risen and job security is par to none. As Australian citizens themselves have lost their jobs, it is no surprise that travelers have therefore lost theirs, too. The COVID19 pandemic has made it increasingly difficult to not only engage in work within the more common fields of Hospitality and Tourism, but ever-more-so, the Regional and Specified work restricted fields, too. Regional employers within these specific areas seemingly don’t have the capacity or funds to employ current travelers, and the few who do, seem to have already filled their limited spaces. Exceeding amounts of foreigners are all fighting for the same minimal employment opportunities, while falling short. This is becoming more of a challenge too, as Australian Government and World-Wide borders have closed, making traveling for employment opportunities, utterly impossible. I write this letter not because I believe that Specified Work isn’t important or valuable to the beautiful Country of Australia, but because I believe there may be additional Cultural Opportunities within Australia. Travelers on Working Holiday Visas and other Foreigner Visas are having the utmost difficulty in attaining to the Australian Immigration Law restrictions. The year, 2020 has experienced many drastic, abrupt, and unforeseeable changes, making the Working Holiday and Travelling Visa, not one to remain stagnant. As we are experiencing a vast increase in unemployment rates and a decrease in traveling opportunities, I ask that you kindly consider and support accepting Au-Pair Work as an 88day/3 month Second and Third year Visa extension opportunity; or seemingly pardon Visa Holders from completing their designated 88days/3 month Specified Work obligation, this year. I do believe the Au-Pair experience is quite enriching and fulfilling, as it allows you to fully live, eat, breathe, and engage in being a part of a true Australian Family. This role has been seen much more available to foreigners, as parents have needed extra assistance while homeschooling their children through the pandemic and isolation. Although I understand that not all travelers may be equally suited or able to partake in this role, I believe it may be a good alternative for a vast population of patrons, as others may not be deemed physically suitable to partake in the Regional work prescribed by the Australian Immigration. When we look into the Immigration Obligations objectively, we can appreciate that not all travelers are able to partake in such physically intensive, and taxing jobs as currently prescribed for Visa Extensions, nor are travelers able to access the appropriate work currently, either. As current Regional and Rural Specified Work obligations are restricted to quite laborious jobs, employment working within a true Australian family, enhancing children’s lives, teaching and mentoring through emotional and intellectual health, as well as partaking in the families everyday routine, would be much more suitable for the latter of the population. As an Au-Pair, you not only embrace the joyful moments of being a part of a family, but you grow as an individual as you are tested each day through compassion, patience, diligence, problem-solving, and educating. We are learning how to cope with difficult situations from mood changes, to diagnosed illness’, too. Being an Au-Pair has taught me more than any job I have previously had, as you are co-living with varying ages, mental and physical abilities, likes, and dislikes. Notably, I recognize this as a great alternative for the less suitably physically intensive employee, wishing to continue partaking in appropriate care-work for a successful Second and Third year Working Holiday Visa. As a foreigner, I believe it is my due-diligence to suggest the Australian Immigration accepts the Au-Pair role as 88days/3 months Visa Extension or pardons the requirements for Visa Holders, who have traveled to Australia prior to the pandemic. Foreigners' access and availability to complete their designated work, has been drastically reduced this year, due to the unforeseen COVID19 circumstances. Our reduced time, unemployment status, and limited abilities of travel, have created more obstacles in not only fulfilling Specified Visa requirements, but genuinely experiencing Australia. Adding an additional field of Specified Work, to the Visa Extension obligation or pardoning the Specified Work obligation this year, would highly elevate many travelers' stress and frustration, throughout this trying time. We are finding it exceedingly difficult to not only qualify, but also travel to the designated work areas, making completing our Visa Extension task, increasingly challenging. We, as foreigners, are outnumbered by the limited spaces available to complete our work, and we, as foreigners, simply do not want to lose out on experiencing real Australia, due to this pandemic and lack of Specified Employment opportunity. In summary,The current unemployment rate in Australia is almost 8%Foreign Visa workers are restricted by border closures and the availability of accessing jobsSpecified work in regional areas is limited due to COVID-19, drought and bushfiresAustralians are given in most instances the first preference for work over foreignersRelaxation on the 3 months specified work for the 2020/2021 period should be considered If you agree, please sign below.I appreciate your support.

Blue Cross Blue Shield: Don't Take Away My Meds to Prove I'm Sick

I was diagnosed with CVID nearly 2 1/2 years ago. I get a medication delivered via a pump once or twice a week to help give me antibodies to fight infection. While the treatment is inconvenient, it does help me to function normally as a middle school teacher. When on the medication, I have energy, drive, and am willing to take on a lot. I also get sick less often when on treatment.  Without treatment, my numbers slowly drop and my body stops responding to illness and is overtaken by it. My moods change, my memory is affected, I get a lot of symptoms of arthritis, and I cannot sleep (even while exhausted). With this new policy by BCBSIL (an insurance company), BCBSIL is allowed to determine who receives treatment instead of doctors who actually see the patients. Very few people who have CVID now qualify based on the new numbers (which would require the patients to be near-death and gravely ill). According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, stopping a patient from treatment on a difinitively diagnosed patient to run a trial for four months is medical malpractice. Furthermore, the AAAAI also states that IGG trough levels (the numbers that BCBSIL goes off of) fluctuate and should not be used as the sole determination for diagnosis. There are many things that need to be taken into consideration and no two CVID patients are alike. Some people have "normal" trough levels, others are incredibly low. Both groups respond well to IVIG/SUBQ treatment. I meet every other condition/category.  That said, it is important for people like me to receive the medication that I require to keep me healthy. If caught early and if treated, I can live a normal life span. An insurance company cannot deny a diabetic insulin, so why should an insurance company be allowed to deny those with an immune deficiency life sustaining treatment? It is appalling.  Once diagnosed, it is the job of the insurance company to provide treatment. End of story. No one should have to re-qualify for coverage by going off of treatment for 4 months and retesting (meaning that I will only receive treatment 8 mos out of the year IF I qualify after the 4 mos of NO treatment). It should be my doctor's decision, not BCBSIL's decision. Please sign this petition to help get this policy changed.

    Petition to The People, Congress

    Qualifying Our Elected Officials

It has become clear to the people in this country and around the world as we face the greatest crisis in the past 100 years, many of our leaders with power and authority in government have gotten to their positions beyond their abilities to do their job. A typical characteristic flaw in recognizing these leaders are those who want the authority, but not the responsibility of their position. When we are faced with something like this pandemic, or any situation requiring true leadership and guidance, we need our leaders to have the ability to clearly see the situation and deal with it in the best possible manner. We have not seen it here with our President Trump. When we have some of the best generals, doctors, engineers, educators, scientists and other professionals who have shown their proven abilities in their respective fields, the president has called on none of them. Instead he has called on Vice President Pence who is directly responsible for the AIDS epidemic in Indiana as governor. Therefore I propose a test for any politically elected or appointed position in government to see if they are qualified for that position. How do we do this? As in many fields, like medical, legal, financial, educational, and in the military, there are specific tests to pass in order to be in that position. This would include an intelligent quota (IQ) test, a creative thinking test, abstract relationships test, a geography test, a logistics test, a history test, a math test,  and most important, an ethics/morality test. I am sure that if we could implement this test PRIOR to taking office for all the people to review, we would have a better America. I am proposing this as a petition from the people for current government positions and for those running for office. This overall personality and ability test would follow the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator test, which many have taken for executive positions. As we have witnessed, our government is too important to have incapable people running them. These various tests currently exist at companies, the military, medical facilities, and universities. We deserve to have the best and the brightest in these important and vital positions, including the President of the United States. Therefore, for the sake of our country, its people, and for the sake of the world, we ask that you sign this petition to DEMAND an abilities test for our elected officials and to NOT ALLOW anyone into their respective offices who cannot pass this test to govern. As we are currently witnessing, do we believe our lives are too important to have incapable, incompetent, ignorant, mentally unstable, paranoid officials running our government? The people have the right to know if they are qualified. With millions of lives at stake this is too important to not act NOW.
