    Keep Grading Options Flexible

Education can only be accessible if students have options. As a body of students we want to switch our focus from Grade Point Averages to actually learning without this choice affecting academic excellence. We are urging the University of Manitoba administration to permanently implement changes to grading options:  >>You can keep your letter grades as they are. >>You can keep your letter grade but have it excluded from your GPA.>>If you receive a letter grade that you aren’t happy with, you can opt to have a “P” appear on your transcript instead. >>You can voluntarily withdraw from the course. Please, provide ALL students with options and the opportunity to succeed regardless of their circumstances (with or without pandemic crisis)

Flexible Course Assessment at University of Manitoba for Winter 2020 Term

Things are changing quickly this term for students as a result of COVID 19. Workload seems to be increasing or at least changing unpredictably, instructors are acting independently, various internal and external factors are inducing so much extra anxiety on students, and these conditions are not what students are used to. Other academic institutions realized this and took action. University of Calgary conveyed their care for the student experience and the importance of their mental health, and here is what they did... As an example, if you get an A+, you may accept, and it boosts your GPA, but if you barely pass with a D for example, you can let it weigh your GPA down, or take it as a Pass instead. That is, you have the FLEXIBILITY / OPTION to be able to not repeat the course but it won't show on your transcript as a low-grade due to these unforeseen circumstances. More information: https://ucalgary.ca/news/final-grades-winter-2020-term Other institutions throughout Canada have implemented this program or variations of it, and the beneficiaries here are students. Speak up, don't let one term hold you back, stay safe and keep well.

University of Windsor: Flexible Final Grading Choices for Winter 2020 Term

For University of Windsor Students Only In response to COVID-19, the University of Windsor announced the following grading choices: (1) Pass/Fail; (2) keep final marks as posted; or (3) voluntarily withdraw from your course. However, most of these choices are only available AFTER students are already required to take final assessments. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, students face too many problems to count, including familial layoffs, job insecurity, health risks, home environments that are unsafe or non-conducive to this new mode of learning, unequal internet access compounded by inaccessible public transit, parents/caregivers who have the added pressure of caring for their children, and stress and anxiety induced by self-isolation/quarantine and the uncertainty posed by the pandemic. Expecting students to write exams without exception, and only allowing them choices after final marks are posted, is unrealistic, unaccommodating, and unacceptable. The Pass/Not Pass option is unfair to students who have worked hard to achieve their grades all semester, and it's impractical as an option for students pursuing a degree in a graduate or professional program. Likewise, the Voluntary Withdrawal option negates students’ hard work and will have financial implications for students, especially for those relying on OSAP. In the Provost's March 16th memo to instructors, his recommendations included a grade freeze. This, however, remains at the discretion of each instructor, rather than a uniform University policy. An irregular practice like this will see some students benefit while others continue to struggle and be disadvantaged. Our ask is simple: We request a University-wide policy, applicable to all faculties with the exception of Law and Education, that gives students two additional choices: 1. A grade freeze, whereas students can opt-out of final assessments and be graded on all coursework up to the last day of classes (provided 60% of the grade has been assessed); and   2. To request a Pass/Non-Pass grade based on all coursework completed before final assessments.   More information: https://uwsa.ca/joint-letter-on-final-grading-choices-due-to-covid-19/ Supported by: University of Windsor Students' Alliance (UWSA), Graduate Students' Society (GSS), Organization of Part-time University Students (OPUS), Science Society, Odette Commerce Society, Human Kinetics Society, Computer Science Society, Engineering Society, Creative Arts Students' Society, Social Work Students' Association, Students' Law Society, Education Society, Society of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, Dramatic Arts Society, Nursing Society and International Students' Society.

Petition to Chicago Public School District, Chicago Teachers Union, Mayor Lori Lightfoot

Flexible scheduling for remote learning from CPS. Only 1-3 hours for K-4 & Diverse Learner

One week into E-learning and it is a disaster. The expectations from the district put upon students and the working parents of this city are unrealistic. As working parents, We can not forgo our sources of income to be tethered to our young and diverse learner’s chrome-books by CPS mandating everyone be present and accounted for for 6 hours a day. We need the flexibility to do the work on our own schedule. The youngest children whose learning you are responsible for are developmentally unable to hold their attention span on a screen for such a long period of time. In addition, the American Academy of Pediatrics only recommends up to only 1 hour per day for 2-5 year olds, and 1-1.5 hours for 6-10 year olds. Teachers know that the average length of a lesson should be 20 minutes because that is the attention span of a young child. Why did the district not consider this when they came out with their plan? I know that you cannot possibly cover everything you must cover in only an hour so I propose that all e-learning be for up to three hours in the morning, with the rest of the homework done in an asynchronous fashion with the teachers setting the guidelines and the parents teaching them when they can, according to what works best for their families’ schedule. All lunch breaks should be at the same time for the ease of working parents with multiple children. The teachers can also make videos of the lessons to be done so again, the families can learn on their own schedule. If the district does not change their current model, all parents should unenroll their students and do what works best for their families. I wonder if we had our elected school board promised by Mayor Lightfoot, would the considerations of the working parents and our most precious resource- our children- Have been ignored? Change must happen as soon as possible if Chicago Public Schools expects to have any students or tax base left.
