STOP the ADHA from eliminating NECESSARY BOARD EXAMS required to obtain a clinical license

Registered Dental Hygienists are required to pass rigorous board exams in order to obtain licensure to treat patients. The ADHA (American Dental Hygiene Association) is taking advantage of the COVID-19 crisis to pass unprecedented deregulation allowing students that haven't met the requirements for licensure to practice dental hygiene. Please support the dental professionals who wish to protect the patients and demand that all requirements for licensure be met.  #dontcheapenourprofession #rdhstrong

Lilliana's Law -- Eliminating Dangerous Equipment from Education Spaces

Lilliana's Law House Bill 5984 would amend the Revised School Code to require the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to conduct yearly safety inspections of school buildings and provide notice of violations. Under the bill, before August 15, 2019 and yearly thereafter, DHHS would have to inspect each school building operated by a public or nonpublic school for health and safety violations. School building would include a building used primarily to provide instruction to pupils and a recreational or athletic structure or field intended to be used by pupils. DHHS would have to provide notice of any health or safety violations to the school's governing body within 14 days after the inspection, with any required or recommended modifications or remedial measures noted. Within 14 days after receiving the notice, a school's governing body would have to submit proof of any remedial measures taken to correct violations. Proposed MCL 380.1264

Petition to Colorado State Senate, Colorado State House, First Gentleman Marlon Reis

Stop the HB21-1160 legislation eliminating no-kill shelters in Colorado.

I wanted to share with everyone that didn't know about HB21-1160, that it has reared its ugly head again this year.  This bill effectively eliminates the option of a true no-kill shelter as this bill would deem as neither "Healthy nor Safe". I personally know that MaxFund No-Kill Animal Shelter is one of the places that will be highly impacted by this bill.  I am a volunteer and through my volunteer time I fell in love with a dog that was deemed unadoptable.  Because MaxFund is so great at working with the animals and making sure they are ready to be in a home before they even open up the possibility of adoption, had I not come along, my special boy would have never lived life outside of MaxFund, or possibly Majestic which is a long-life safe haven for dogs that can’t be deemed safe.  More on that to come.  My pup was approved walkers only, which meant that I had to get special permission to even interact with him.  Not because he was aggressive, or was mean, but because he was scared.  It is very apparent that his past contained many different forms of abuse and because of that, he is triggered A LOT.  When he is scared, he does just about everything he can (including biting) to get out of the situation.  I was approved quickly (because I have past experience with abused animals and can become the alpha quickly) and began working with him.  I took him on “field trips” every week to see what triggered him, and to give him extra stimulation.  After two months of constant work and home visits, I brought him home.  He has adjusted beautifully to normal life and is thriving in a strong and caring environment.  Without MaxFund, and the work that they do with not only “non-safe” dogs, but dogs that are sick or injured and they nurse them back to health, I would not have my special pup.  He is my constant companion, and my cuddle bug.  He just needed someone to give him a chance.   Just because animals aren’t ready to be adopted, doesn’t mean that they will live a bad life.  Some go to fosters, some will stay at the shelter and some will graduate to a magical place called Majestic.  Majestic is a mountain home for wayward dogs who can’t be rehabbed into a regular home.  Each one has a large enclosure where they can run and play and live out their life in a stress-free environment.  Just because a dog doesn’t get to eventually live in a traditional home doesn’t mean that they are miserable or abandoned or mistreated.  Even at MaxFund, the dogs interact with volunteers and staff daily and if possible put in play-groups where they can interact with other appropriate dogs.  They are socialized, taught commands and manners, loved, cuddled; and bottom line, they are ALIVE AND SAFE.   Please take a moment to sign this petition so that we may present to the legislature a strong and united front that all animals matter; and just because they have experienced trauma, it shouldn’t be a death sentence.  There are too many high-kill shelters now, so let the ones who are willing to do the hard work continue to do so. Petition to student body

Eliminating Exams for the 1st Semester of the 2020-21 School Year at MSHS

Due to having nearly 1/3 of our 1st semester being held purely online, and not in active learning environments, we feel it is too much to ask to have a semester exam based on knowledge that we learned only 2/3 during school, and 1/3 on our own time which is full of distractions. A system of having any type of exam is set up for failure, for those who have harder times learning in a virtual setting, or those who need extra help and were unable to get it, will inevitably not do well in the exams which will result in school wide lower grades of even the top students. Having exams during a crisis like the time we are in, adds stress and anxiety on top of the already high amounts we are put in as students. This will lead to decreases in the mental health of the student body along with our grades, to an even further extent than to what it has already degraded due to the various lockdowns and confinement’s we have been in.

Eliminating RACIAL healthcare disparities starts with NURSES

The Justice System isn’t the only thing failing Black Americans. The current nursing curriculum is doing an extremely poor job at educating nursing students on health care discrepancies against minorities. Many nursing students have no idea that racial health care disparities exist. This can lead to major consequences such as injury and death.   The healthcare community has proven to have biases against people of color. Here are some alarming statistics that are not talked about in classroom, textbooks, or the hospital setting: Black Americans are dying of COVID 3x the rate than white people Black women are 3-4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women. One study showed that 40% of first-and-second year white male medical students believed the stereotype that black people have thicker or less sensitive skin  1 in 5 patients experience health care discrimination  22% of black patients are less likely to receive any pain medication.  It is evident that not all individuals receive the same care. Signing this petition will allow change to occur in nursing curriculum. Health care professionals need to be held accountable for treating and advocating for ALL of their patients. As nursing students that will soon enter the healthcare profession, it’s important to instill change to make a difference in future upcoming nurses. There are many factors that create racial healthcare disparities, but holding schools responsible is a step in the right direction.  Nursing students at Grand Canyon University are demanding change to be implemented.  For more information on healthcare disparities please read the articles listed below:  http://voice.ons.org/news-and-views/nurses-must-understand-health-disparities-to-provide-effective-patient-education https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/need-extra-precautions/racial-ethnic-minorities.html https://tcf.org/content/report/racism-inequality-health-care-african-americans/?agreed=1 https://www.aamc.org/news-insights/how-we-fail-black-patients-pain https://www.americanbar.org/groups/crsj/publications/human_rights_magazine_home/the-state-of-healthcare-in-the-united-states/racial-disparities-in-health-care/ https://www.endofound.org/the-disparities-in-healthcare-for-black-women https://aapf.org/healthdisparities https://newsroom.heart.org/news/racial-disparities-continue-for-black-women-seeking-heart-health-care

Reduce waste in Ottawa by eliminating single-use, disposable plastics & bags

PetitionTo: the Council of the City of Ottawa110 Laurier Avenue WestOttawa, ON K1P 1J1 Whereas: The continued implementation of single-use and disposable plastics and plastic bags are creating an environmental issue in Ottawa. I/We the undersigned, petition the Council of the City of Ottawa as follows: Ottawa is a beautiful city, a city many of us have had the opportunity to witness incredible growth and change over the years. With Ottawa being the nation’s capital, we believe that we should be a city that leads and inspires change that is beneficial not only to it’s citizens, but to our community around us.We believe that it is our responsibility as citizens of Ottawa, to protect and care about our city. Caring for it and protecting it shows great respect for our city, as well as ourselves. It is no secret that we are facing a global waste issue but we believe we can work together to prevent further waste and create a long-lasting and impactful change.Currently our landfills are full. With our city growing larger, we don’t have the capacity to hold the increasing amount of waste. While the green bin and recycling is helpful, we believe we can further reduce our waste by: Banning the use and sale of single-use, disposable plastic bags Banning single-use, disposable plastic items such as cutlery, plates and cups Cities that have already implemented these changes are: Fort McMurray, Alberta is the first city in Canada (since 2010) to ban single-use bags both paper and plastic, including biodegradable bags. The by-law allow bags from fast-food restaurants and bags for bulk use like produce and bags from pharmacies and liquor stores. Leaf Rapids, Manitoba banned single-use plastic bags in 2007. The town imposed the ban not only because of the detrimental impact the bags have on the environment but also because of the impact on the community's aesthetics Montreal, Quebec banned plastic bags January 1, 2018 San Francisco, California became the first state in the U.S. to ban plastic bags and plastic bottles in 2014. France became the first country to ban plastic bags, plastic plates and cutlery, a ban which goes into effect in 2020. Bangladesh became the first nation to ban plastic bags in 2002, after they blocked up drainage systems during flooding. Other cities, such as Toronto, Ontario and Halifax, Nova Scotia are also considering banning plastic bags as well. Why is this important? It will help to reduce plastic waste in the landfill as we move to biodegradable items that can be composted. Plastic is not biodegradable. It supports the use of petroleum, blocks drainage systems, is harmful to wildlife and ruins the aesthetics of the city’s streets and parks. Plastic bags cost retailers an estimated $4 billion dollars a year. Businesses will save money, and can also earn more by selling reusable bags which can be made locally using scrap fabric. Ikea is a great example of a company that went from using 25 million disposable bags a year to banning them altogether in 2009. Our city now has our first “zero waste” grocery store, Nu Grocery. We also have a Zero Waste Ottawa Resources Facebook group with over 600 members, which means we are a community that is already seeking ways to reduce our waste. There are many others in Ottawa joining the movement to reduce waste and seek alternatives. We are leaders in Ottawa, striving for change and we care deeply about the city and environment we live in. Please help us reduce waste and be the change by banning single use, disposable plastics! Sincerely,The Citizens of Ottawa __ By signing this petition, I hereby acknowledge that this petition will become a public document at the City of Ottawa and that all information contained in it will be subject to the scrutiny of the City, and will be publicly available. Questions about the collection and disclosure of personal information contained in this petition should be directed to the City Clerk, 110 Laurier Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario, K1P 1J1.

Petition to press@dunkinbrands.com , The Dunkin' Donuts Leadership Team, Nigel Travis, Jack Clare, David Hoffman, Scott Murphy, Karen Raskopf, Tony Weisman

THANK Dunkin' Donuts for eliminating foam cups!

Like me, are you tired of signing petitions for what you don't want?  Then take a moment to sign this one, and say thank you to Dunkin' Donuts for working toward a future we do want... a future without Styrofoam (expanded polystyrene foam) waste!   Dunkin' Donuts announced yesterday (2/7/18) they will begin replacing their ubiquitous foam cup with a new double-walled paper cup (see photo above) in the US this spring, and promise to eliminate foam cups worldwide in 2020. https://news.dunkindonuts.com/news/dunkin-donuts-to-eliminate-foam-cups-worldwide-in-2020 I stopped drinking Dunkin' Donuts coffee (which I love) due to their foam cups; I look forward to again buying Dunkin' Donuts coffee at my local Leonia, NJ shop -- in a new paper cup as soon as the foam cups are gone!  I choose where I spend my consumer dollar, and I want the leadership team at Dunkin' Donuts to know that their actions and policies to protect the environment and work toward sustainability are important to me.  It is important to all of us*, to the children in our lives, to future generations. Join me in signing this petition.  And since big businesses seem to have more sway these days than the common sense majority, also join me in asking the Dunkin' Donuts Leadership Team to share their example of corporate responsibility and to apply their influence in support of Environmental Protection and Sustainability policies at federal and international levels. If they do this, I'll buy Dunkin' Donuts coffees for everyone at my local Leonia, NJ shop! *When the Leonia Action Alliance, a grassroots community group, worked toward making my small New Jersey town Styrofoam-Free, it identified these Top 5 Reasons to Eliminate Styrofoam:1) Health Hazard (contains neurotoxins)2) Environmental Hazard (manufacturing produces hazardous waste)3) Not really recyclable (difficult and expensive to reprocess - not recycled in my town)4) Not Biodegradable (Styrofoam ends up in landfill and lasts forever)5) Pollutes rivers and oceans; Kills fish and wildlifeLearn more: http://leoniaactionalliance.org/styrofoam-details.php

Help us stop Mark Twain National Forest from eliminating public hunting of feral hogs

Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri is asking for comments. MDC has already implemented ‘No hog hunting’ on grounds owned or controlled by the MDC and are now working to convince MTNF officials to do the same. MDC has been repeatedly known to kill hogs that they trap, then pile them up to rot, rather than offer them to the public for meat. Although they say the dead hogs are spread out rather than piled, I have personally seen multiple sights with 3 to 6 dead hogs in a pile to the side of fire trails and have talked with others that have seen piles of hogs on the banks of tributaries to the Current River in the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. Until July 23rd they are accepting comments from the public. I talked directly to Brian Davidson, MTNF and Alan Leary, MDC at a feral hog meeting in Rolla, MO on June 18 and asked what could be done, by the public, to convince them to continue to allow the eradication of feral hogs by all means available, trapping, hunting, shooting on sight rather than only trying to have the 28 full time employees of MDC or MTNF trying to ‘trap only’  Missouri’s feral hog population that is growing rapidly. Please sign this petition to convince our political representatives, Mark Twain National Forest Officials and Missouri Department of Conservation that every available means to eradicate feral hogs in Missouri is a much better and more economic approach than only using employees to eradicate feral hogs on an additional 1.5 million acres in the Ozark Mountains in addition to the 1.3+ million acres the MDC owns or controls.

    Eliminating plastic straws from Connecticut

As citizens, we need to eliminate Plastic Straws from our state (Connecticut) due to their negative effects on the environment, such as their inability to biodegrade. We have to save our environment before the results of this issue cause irreversible damage to the place we call home. NOT only a humans home, but the home of Every species on this planet we have known and loved for MILLIONS of years. If this proves to be a success we will move on to other states saving; habitats, oceans, and the millions of lives that belong to everyone, and everything on this earth.
