We, Buddhists and scholars from all over the world, are writing to Swedish authoritiesin regards a Swedish Buddhist scholar Mr. Vello Vaartnou (PhD), whorecently returned home from Australia, where he was grantedDistinguished Talent Visa (visa for prominent people who haveinternationally recognized achievement in a particular field).
Vello Vaartnou moved to Öland, where he works on his online ChineseBuddhist Encyclopedia, which he introduced to public at UC Berkeleyin 2012 and which was from the very beginning called a Century Projectbecause of its capacity and innovative approach to the material.
Vello Vaartnou is a respected person in the academic world and theglobal Buddhist community for his exclusive and highly regardedacademic projects in the field of Buddhist sciences. He is aphilosopher, a theorist and practitioner, author of two encyclopediasand two academic international Buddhism conferences. Vello Vaartnou isalso a specialist in Asian art and culture, his art works have foundtheir place in the Royalfamily of Thailand, the universities of Berkeley and Mahachula,Bhutan, as well as Stockholm Ethnographic Museum.
Mr. Vaartnou is known at the University of Berkeley and leadinguniversities in the world as a Swedish scientist. Thanks to his uniqueacademic projects, he brings fame to Swedish science. We believe thatSweden and the local community in Öland should recognize theimportance of Mr. Vaartnuo's projects and support his dedicated workin the field of highly rated area of study that benefits Swedishscience.
Mr. Vaartnou has recently founded Swedish Buddhist Studies fordevelopment of academic study of Buddhism in Sweden to give morecomplete picture of one of the most ancient religions on Earth -Buddhism, and we believe that modern people should also study Buddhistculture in an academic way.
We, Buddhists and scholars from all over the world, fully support the projects ofVello Vaartnou, especially his latest project "Swedish BuddhistStudies."
For example, in Russia, we have a very long tradition of academic study of Buddhismat universities and we highly value academic studies about Buddhism.
According to Mr Vaartnou, the local community and social services arenot interested in his presence, they refuse him the right to live inan apartment, citing the high cost of its maintenance, and did nothelp to pay bills for the Internet which is vital for his work.
We, Buddhists and scholars from all over the world turn to the Swedish authorities topay special attention and create comfortable working conditions for a69-year-old scientist, Mr Vello Vaartnou, who is working on avoluntary basis on a fundamental Buddhist encyclopedia that has noanalogues in the world, and support his non profit Swedish BuddhistStudies project.
