Protect the legacy of Winston Churchill on UK banknotes for generations to come!
The Issue
🚨 URGENT: SAVE WINSTON CHURCHILL ON THE £5 NOTE! 🚨
Hey everyone — this one’s for every Brit, history lover, meme lord, student, gamer, TikToker, and proud patriot who doesn’t want our legends erased from everyday life.
Winston Churchill is more than just a face on the fiver. He’s the bulldog who stared down Nazi tyranny in 1940, rallied a nation with “We shall fight on the beaches,” led Britain through its darkest hour, and helped save the free world alongside the Allies. His unbreakable spirit, razor-sharp wit, and sheer determination turned the tide of history. Without him, the map of the 20th century — and the freedoms we take for granted today — could look wildly different.
But right now, the Bank of England is quietly planning to remove Churchill (and other historical icons like Jane Austen, Turner, and Turing) from the next series of £5, £10, £20, and £50 notes. Instead, they’re going full wildlife mode — think beavers, puffins, foxes, or frogs taking centre stage.
They ran a public consultation last year where “nature” won as the theme. Now there’s a shortlist of 18 UK animals, and the final vote closes super soon on 3 July 2026. New notes won’t hit wallets for years, but once they do, Churchill’s iconic portrait (that legendary 1941 Karsh photo) will eventually disappear from circulation.
This isn’t just about money. It’s about who we choose to remember. Currency is one of the few things that touches every single person in the country every single day. Putting Churchill on the £5 note since 2016 was a powerful reminder of resilience, leadership, and standing up for what’s right. Replacing him with animals (as cool as British wildlife is) risks diluting that connection to our history.
Young people especially — this matters for you. History isn’t boring dusty books. It’s the reason you can speak freely, scroll memes without fear, and live in a democratic society. Churchill’s story is peak underdog energy: a guy who was written off multiple times but rose up when it counted most. Keeping him on the notes keeps that fire alive for the next generation. It shows we value courage, intellect, and big moments over just “vibes” or aesthetics. Plus, imagine pulling out a fiver and telling your mates, “Yeah, that’s the legend who saved Britain — respect.”
Why sign and share this petition?
To tell the Bank of England and decision-makers that history shouldn’t be erased for trends.
To celebrate BOTH wildlife AND our national heroes (they don’t have to be mutually exclusive).
To hit a big signature milestone and generate real noise before the July 3 deadline.
Because every share on WhatsApp groups, Insta stories, TikTok, Snapchat, X, Facebook, Discord, school/uni chats, and family threads multiplies the impact.
We’ve already got over 2,300 signatures and growing fast, but we need thousands more to make them listen. Your name, your voice, your one share — it all counts.
