Return control of Common Good Assets to Local Community Councils.

The Issue

We, the people of Scotland, believe that our Common Good Land is not being managed properly by our elected representatives on a county/city level. The evidence for this includes the fact that many councils do not even know what their common good land consists of - Dundee council, for example, reports, "I would advise that the Council do not keep a record of the location or extent of land and property in the form of Burgh Commons or a separate record of Common Good Land."

Our common land is too precious a resource for our children, as well as citizens now, to be left to such poor management. We, the people, require that this land is managed both correctly and transparently by the local community for the local community. We believe, therefore, that our community councils should be the guardians of the common good fund and, furthermore, that local people should have full access to the accounts at all times. We also hold that the local community should have the final vote on any such changes to said land. We ask that you consider this petition and make such necessary changes to the law.

Stewart NoblePetition StarterI started a facebook group 'The Battle for Bogton' on the 12th June 2013 in response to Moray Council granting outline planning permission to a property developer for a proposed shopping mall on our common good land. I have lived and loved Forres since moving here 27 years ago. I am an independent person with no other agenda except to see that democracy prevails. Within just 7 days an amazing 1400 people liked the page. It became clear that these 'landgrabs' were happening all over Scotland so together we came up with the wording of this petition. If Scottish interests are best decided by the people who live in Scotland then local interests are best decided by the local towns people too. Restoring this responsibility to Local Community Councils will empower local people to get involved in an important tier of our countries democracy as well as allowing us to manage our common good assets more carefully.
