Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell

Protect Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the Elkhorn Ranch

    1. Petition by

      Dakota Resource Council

We urge you as Secretary of the Interior to uphold your word to protect Theodore Roosevelt National Park and its viewshed from the impacts of the Bakken oil development.

In order to protect this landscape that was so sacred to our 26th president, Theodore Roosevelt, we ask that you establish strong consultation amongst the agencies under your purview, such as the National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management in the approval process for any development that may negatively impact park resources, including viewsheds, water, historic character, habitat, and park visitor experience.

Such impacts need to be minimized for the sake of the park.

Not only do the impacts of the Bakken oil development need to be minimized for the sake of the park, they also need to be minimized for the sake of the people. If a site as sacred as Theodore Roosevelt National Park cannot be protected from development, then what other location may be in jeopardy? The American West must remain wild for the sake of the American people. The loss of these wild places will result in the loss of America's free spirit.

This is an incredibly beautiful and historic area and should be preserved.
