Remove Jim Roddey as your chair!

The Head of the Republican Party in Allegheny County Jim Roddey said yesterday "There was a disappointment tonight. I was very embarrassed. I was in this parking lot and there was a man looking for a space to park, and I found a space for him. And I felt badly -- he looked like he was sort of in distress. And I said, 'Sir, here's a place.' And he said, 'That's a handicapped space.' I said, 'Oh I'm so sorry, I saw that Obama sticker and I thought you were mentally retarded." - Pennsylvania Allegheny County GOP Chairman Jim Roddey, speaking last night at a Romney fundraiser. The crowd roared

IT IS UNACCEPTABLE to make fun of the intellectually disabled as part of a punchline in a joke.  If Mr. Roddey and the GOP can't treat the most vulnerable population with dignity and respect, how are we going to expect them to treat everyone else?

Because people with disabilities deserve the same amount of respect as everyone else.

All people deserve to be treated as people. This comment is disgusting and anyone that says something like this clearly does not deserve the right of public office.

As a mother and an educator, I am outraged at Mr. Roddey's insensitive "joke." His apology is totally inadequate, as he is clearly mostly sorry that the story got out beyond the cozy little celebration whose attendees enjoyed it so much! Apologizing for an insensitive and demeaning attempt at humor cannot change that he had the insensitive and boorish mindset to have considered it funny in the first place! The RCAC ought to be embarrassed to be associated with him in any way, let alone to have him as their chairperson!

Hateful speech is a big part of what is destroying our democracy. An apology isn't good enough. It's clear that Mr. Roddy has poor judgment, and it seems quite possible that his "joke" also shows what is in his heart. It's unacceptable.

There are enough matters of policy and principle to consume a thorough discussion. This relentless use of insult and disrespect is a blight on all Americans. Republicans are the prime practitioners of this and they must cease and desist.
