Pull Law and Order SVU off the Air
The Issue
Law and Order SVU has gotten extremely more graphic, extremely more in-depth and the story lines are unbelievingly triggering to people who have been raped, abused, or sexually assualted. As a rape survivor myself, I am baffled by the lack of concern on the part of NBC and Mariska Hargitay, the lead officer and associate writer for the show.
Although I have boycotted watching the show, the coming attractions and commercials for upcoming episodes ALONE are triggering, and enough to cause PTSD flashbacks. The producers show complete disregard for sexual abuse victims and the episodes have completely crossed the line.
NBC has just announced that they are going to continue Law and Order SVU for one more season, and I think that is HUGE mistake and a violation against the peace of mind for all of the men and women out there who are trying to recover from a traumatic event.
According to statistics from RAINN.org, someone is sexually assualted every TWO MINUTES in the United States. 97% of rapists will NEVER spend a day in jail because people are afraid to come foreward after such an event. There is an average of 237,868 victims (age 12 or older) of sexual assault each year
