Recently, Toshiba launched notebooks featuring a 21:9 display resolution. This is the straw that broke the camel's back for us! Probably watching a movie on one of those will be quite the experience, but doing some actual work--or just browsing the internet--will be horrible.

It all began when "Full HD" televisions, with a 16:9 aspect ratio, became popular. In their wake, computer monitors also started to trend towards this aspect ratio, most likely because just having one fixed aspect ratio to produce panels for is cheaper on the manufacturers. The 16:10 aspect ratio (e.g. 1920x1200 resolution), which we prefer on our computers, is becoming rare indeed; only very expensive monitors still feature these kinds of resolutions.

Using a text editor or spreadsheet program, editing photos or videos, managing files, writing a computer program, even just browsing websites or e-mail--just a few examples of tasks that are much more comfortably achieved on a display with an aspect ratio of 16:10 than on anything wider than that.

We petition all manufacturers of computer displays to *please* keep making 16:10 monitors (and that includes notebook screens), and stop forcing all of us into less productive display aspect ratios. The amount of signatures on this petition should be a clear sign to you that ultra-widescreen is NOT the preferred choice of the customer.
