Legalize Exotic Pets in CA: Short-Tailed Opossum, Hedgehogs, Sugar Gliders
The Issue
The majority of exotic pets that are illegal to own and sell in California are harmless, fully domesticated, and incapable becoming invasive species. The pets listed above are legal within the vast majority of the United States and have yet to cause any significant issues. They have all been successfully bred in captivity so no wild animals are necessary for importation. Since owning these pets would have no impact on their native populations, or the indigenous population of plants and animals within California, they should hereby be legalized for ownership. There are no economic, scientific or logical reasons why these animals should be restricted within California while they are perfectly legal and kept trouble-free throughout the United States.
Due to specialized diets and necessary habitat requirements the above animals would not survive or reproduce successfully outside of their enclosures. If most states don't see any reason why these animals should be made illegal, what possible reason could California have that makes their situation different? Changing the laws will enable for less money to be wasted on seizing harmless exotic pets and allow for Californians to own pets that pose no threat to either themselves or their state.
It is unnecessary to limit the rights of Californians. Being allowed to own captive bred exotic pets such as the ones listed above will have no negative consequences and since ownership of such creatures does not harm anyone the regulation should be overturned.
