 بالرغم من الأوضاع البائسة التي نعيشها نحن كطلاب في لبنان، إن دولتنا لا تراعي هذه الظروف. لبنان في حالة إنهيار قصوى من مختلف النواحي، إن كان إقتصادياً، أم صحياً، أم سياسياً. ولكن الأهم، هو الوضع التربوي والتعليمي. إن جائحات كورونا تركت أثراً على الطلاب في جميع أنحاء العالم، خاصةً على الطلاب الذين يعانون من صعوبةٍ تعليميةٍ وصعوبةٍ معيشيةٍ. وماذا عن ذوي الإحتياجات الخاصة؟ لقد حرم الطلاب من جميع أنواع التفاعل الاجتماعي والعاطفي المتاح في المدرسة. في ظل التعليم عن بعد، يجد معظم الطلاب أنفسهم على حافة الانهيار. ماذا عن أجهزة الكمبيوتر؟ انها غير متوفرة. ماذا عن الانترنت؟ انها أيضاً غير متوفرة. وماذا عن الكهرباء؟ انها للاسف أيضاً غير متوفرة. في الوقت الذي يتابع التلميذ في البلدان الاخرى صفوفه الافتراضية بكل سهولة، مازال الطالب اللبناني ينتظر معجزة لتلبية احتياجاته التعليمية. في الوقت الذي يفكر التلميذ في البلدان الاخرى في مستقبله المشرق، مازال الطالب اللبناني قلق بشأن الوضع الاقتصادي المتردي في بلاده وعملية التلقيح الضعيفة. ناهيك عن إنفجار 4 آب الذي دمر بيروت ودمر آمالنا معها. لم يؤدي إنفجار بيروت إلى صدمة نفسية فقط، بل أدى أيضاً إلى تدمير منازلنا، تاركاً ما يقارب حوالي 300 ألف شخص بلا مأوى، من بينهم العديد من الطلاب. وبالرغم من كل هذا، مازالت حكومتنا منشغلة بإجراء الامتحانات الرسمية، في الوقت الذي تم الغائها في مختلف الدول الكبرى. ألا تدرك دولتنا اننا غير مجهزين نفسياً واكاديمياً لإجراء هذه الامتحانات؟! إضافةً إلى ذلك، نذكر بأن الطلاب لم يتلقو اللقاح بعد، وبالتالي تفشي فيروس كورونا عامر لا مفر منه بغض النثت عن الاحتياطات المأخوذة. ان كان تقديم الافادة سيؤثر على قبول الطلاب في الخارج، فلماذا لا تكون هذه الاختبارات اختيارية؟ اننا قادرين على تزويدك يا معالي الوزير بأسبابٍ لا تعد ولا تحصى، لذلك نحن نطلب تفهمك لهذه الأوضاع العصيبة التي نمر بها. شاهدنا الفساد يترعرع في أعماق دولتنا عبر السنين وها نحن اليوم نشاهد أحلامنا تتطاير بعيداً عنا. لقد تحملنا الكثير، وإجراء الامتحانات الرسمية فوق كل الضغوطات التي نعيشها يعتبر إجراء غير إنساني لا يراعي ظروفنا.

Lebanese students are in dire straits, and the government isn’t doing much to help.
It is an abominable mess. As we all know, the current situation in our country is falling into a bottomless pit— be it the corrupt regime, the soaring inflation rate, the people’s deteriorating mental health, the chaotic management of COVID-19— but most importantly, the academic setbacks. The pandemic had a profound impact on students from all over the world, but especially on vulnerable ones who already face additional learning barriers. Students from low-income families and those with special education needs are deprived of the physical learning opportunities, as well as the social and emotional support available in school communities. Now that virtual learning has overtaken in-person learning, many Lebanese students find themselves living on the edge. Tablets and computers? Unavailable. Internet connection? Unavailable. Electricity? Unavailable.
Where do we go from here?
When students in other countries are comfortably attending online classes, students here are still waiting for a miracle that could fulfill their educative needs.
When students in other countries are thinking of the future ahead, students here are still worrying about the present: the unprecedented economic crisis, the immobile vaccine rollout, etc.
Not to mention the tragic events of August 2020 in Lebanon, including the port explosion on August 4th and the spike in COVID-19 cases. Not only did the Beirut blast lead to widespread psychological trauma among youth, but it also damaged homes as far as 10 km away from the port, leaving almost 300,000 people homeless— among whom many are students.
And on top of all that, the government still INSISTS on doing the official exams— even when almost all other countries canceled them.
They know that most students aren’t mentally or academically prepared for officials.
They know that most students didn’t have adequate educational resources.
They know that most students haven’t taken the vaccine yet, and therefore the spread of the virus is inevitable— no matter the ‘precautions’ taken.
IF canceling the exams will affect students who wish to study abroad, then why not make the exams optional?
The reasons for canceling officials are endless, and we only ask for your understanding.
We’ve dealt with corruption, an obstinate government, a country bombed by greed and chaos, and despite all that, we’ve endured— but matters reach a limit— and adding the pressure and stress of exams on us, students, isn’t by any means humane.
