رفع القيود على سيارات الجنازات المغربية - Lift restrictions on Moroccan funeral cars

The Issue

In Morocco, recent regulations demand the removal of religious phrases and Quranic verses from funeral vehicles, or hearses. For many of us, this restriction touches on a deeply personal issue of religious freedom and cultural expression. Funeral rites are more than just a ceremony; they are profound opportunities to honor our loved ones, to reflect their faith, and to connect them to their cultural identity as they transition from this life.

For those of us within the Muslim community, including Quranic verses on hearses is an integral part of our traditions. It's a way to show reverence and love for the deceased, echoing prayers and drawing spiritual solace during an emotionally charged journey. This erasure of religious elements from something so meaningful feels like a stripping away of our identity and our right to religious expression.

Morocco, known for its rich tapestry of cultural and religious diversity, should celebrate and uphold this identity. Restricting religious symbols in public spaces not only silences individual spiritual voices but also fractures the communal fabric that holds us together.

We understand the need for regulations that promote unity, but these should not come at the cost of dismissing or diluting powerful cultural markers. We urge the Moroccan authorities to reconsider this regulation and find ways to ensure public spaces remain respectful and inclusive of all religious expressions. Consider compromises such as guidelines that ensure respectful and non-offensive displays of religious texts, rather than outright bans.

Let us return to a practice that honors both individual rights and a collective heritage, one that allows all communities in Morocco to express their faith openly and respectfully. Please join me in signing this petition to safeguard our culturally and spiritually resonant traditions across our diverse country.
