I am an individual deeply involved in rescue work - a service that places forgotten and abandoned animals in loving forever homes.  I believe in the transformative power of responsible pet adoption and the subsequent relationship between humans and animals. However, the climbing costs associated with Veterinary care are becoming a staggering burden.  Today's Veterinary bills are becoming impossible to bear for many pet parents and Rescue Organizations alike.

There is now an astonishing financial burden placed upon pet owners, many of whom are simply trying to provide their pets with the necessary care to live happy and healthy lives.

The cost to spay/neuter has become unaffordable for most people, which will result in thousands of cats and dogs having to be euthanized due to the crowded Shelters from incoming puppies and kittens.  The progress of Humane Societies and Rescue Organizations will be set back 50 years and we will once again be inundated with homeless cats and dogs, and these poor, innocent animals will have to pay with their lives.  The number of surrenders has increased dramatically because people can no longer afford their care and others are being forced to euthanize their beloved pets because the Shelters and Rescues are refusing intakes as they are full and have no Foster Homes available.  Many have told me that they have never seen it this bad.

People simply cannot afford the astronomical amounts they are quoted for treatment and/or surgeries.  It is a heartbreaking decision for someone to make because they have no choice.  Pet adoptions are at an all time low - everyone is afraid that they will not be able to afford, first of all, the cost to adopt (the Rescues have to cover their increasing costs) and then the expense should the pet become ill.

Seniors are especially suffering.  They are on a fixed income and for many, their cat or dog is their only companion.

Emergency Clinics are charging even more, as if people have extra money in an emergency or at night.  People are desperate when their pet is injured or sick and their stress is increased two-fold, first with the worry about their pet and second, being able to pay the cost to help them.

For the multitude of Rescue Workers like myself, these escalating costs are unsustainable and pose a real threat to our crucial work.  I am advocating for the regulation and capping of Veterinary fees to combat this growing crisis.

The Veterinarians do incredibly important work, and they deserve a fair wage for their services.  However, the current unregulated state of the system is far too burdensome on pet owners and animal welfare advocates.  We need a middle ground where animal healthcare is affordable and accessible while still fairly compensating Veterinarians for their work.
