Congratulations to everyone who has supported the petition Provide Free Captions for People with Hearing Loss on Video Conferencing Platforms which asked Google, Microsoft and Zoom to make free auto captions available on their platforms for people with hearing loss. We have 40,000 signatures and counting.
Good News! Your voice is being heard!
In May, Google made its Google Meet platform free for everyone. This includes its high quality auto captions. Thank you Google!
Last week, Microsoft announced that Microsoft Teams Free edition would soon support live auto captions. Thank you Microsoft!
What about Zoom?
Prior to COVID-19, Zoom was beta testing auto captioning that was directly integrated into its platform for paid accounts. Zoom was considering making this service free for people with hearing loss with verification via an audiologist note.
When the pandemic hit, this project moved to the back burner as Zoom focused on beefing up security and infrastructure to support its increased volume. This makes sense, but as things settle down, Zoom must make its auto captioning project a priority and commit to making this service widely available for people with hearing loss.
What can you do?
If you want Zoom to roll this out now, please sign and share the petition.
