Zoo Animals and Baby Koalas v Rock Concert events. Please ensure EXTREME NOISE buffer zone of 5 km. Music festival can relocate but captive zoo animals cannot. Well established data and science-based standards are vital to animal health and welfare.
The issue
In 2014, on the Sunshine Coast, animals at a local zoo were subjected day and night to an extreme rock concert event, known as the Music Festival. During the Festival smoke from stage effects surrounded the pens of these captive animals.
Heavy bass beats, high-pitched microphone squeals and screaming vocals could clearly be heard in Nambour, 10 km away!
RESEARCH INDICATES THAT A SINGLE ROCK CONCERT EVENT CAN CAUSE IRREVERSIBLE NOISE-INDUCED HEARING LOSS.*
Queensland Zoo provides a wildlife breeding program, including Tasmanian devils and baby koalas. Mother animals can give birth prematurely and have higher risks when stressed ... NEWBORNS NEED QUIET. These animals need a peaceful, quiet and harmonious environment to thrive ... they SHOULD NOT be disturbed!
PLEASE SIGN AND SHARE PETITION: SAY 'NO' ROCK CONCERT NEAR ZOO! BABY KOALAS AND TASSIE DEVILS NEED PEACE & QUIET... Shhh...HUSH!!
QUIET, PLEASE ... DO NOT DISTURB!
Prolonged, deafening volumes and smoke terrify captive animals. Without escape, some animals can suffer lethal stress-related ‘capture myopathy’ from lactic acid build-up.
Now, the organiser is back and wants to use the Big Pineapple amphitheatre site, adjacent to Queensland Zoo, for the 2015 Music Festival … THIS IS STILL FAR TOO CLOSE ... and there are more appropriate venues available!

Ask Minister Byrne to: Please ensure that extreme events, such as rock concerts OR fireworks, are held a minimum distance of 5 km away from any zoo in Queensland and to REFUSE a permit for the 2015 Music Festival at the Big Pineapple ... and all extreme events!
People may enjoy rock concerts but extreme events are not good for exhibit animals and should be held elsewhere. For a win-win solution, the Music Festival can relocate … these captive zoo animals cannot.
ANIMALS AND ROCK CONCERTS ARE NOT A GOOD MIX!
Well established data indicates smoke and noise pollution are potential stressors: these elements are especially lethal to wildlife. The hearing of all animals is highly sensitive, native wildlife especially. Extreme noise pollution is actually painful for animals. The success of wildlife breeding and release programs depends upon retaining the innate acute hearing facilities of wildlife; normal hearing is vital to any animal.
Regulations state that 'potential stressors' of 'smoke or loud music' are risk factors. Subjecting captive animals to classified stressors is absolutely contrary to the stated aims of legislation and related codes, professional advice AND best practice in animal health and safety! Good science in animal welfare should be respected.
PLEASE PROTECT THE HEALTH, SAFETY AND WELFARE OF ZOO ANIMALS ... SIGN AND SHARE THIS PETITION!
The State has a responsibility to protect the health, safety and welfare of zoo animals. When captive exhibit animals are subjected to prolonged and deafening volumes, obviously, the law is failing to protect them. Captive animals MUST NOT suffer this torment again! Prevention is better than cure: URGENT affirmative action for is needed sooner, rather than later.
Ask Minister Bill Byrne to REFUSE a permit at the Big Pineapple location and to ensure that extreme events, such as rock concerts or fireworks, are held a minimum distance of 5 km away from any zoo in Queensland.

JUST TO BE CLEAR... THERE HAVE BEEN NO FIREWORKS HELD WITH THE MUSIC FESTIVAL. THE FIREWORKS DISPLAY WAS HELD WITH THE MONSTER TRUCKS & MOTOCROSS EVENT IN 2014.
THERE ARE OTHER FIREWORKS DISPLAYS HELD IN THE LOCALITY, AS WELL. IT HAS BEEN REPORTED THAT THESE ARE IMPACTING ON ROOSTING YELLOW-TAILED BLACK COCKATOOS.
FIREWORKS EVENTS SHOULD STAY AT THE SHOWGROUNDS!
