Zoe saved the chickens, it’s time we save her.

The Issue

In a world filled with injustices and real crimes going unpunished, the predicament faced by Zoe Rosenberg is not only unjust but wildly disproportionate. Zoe, a compassionate animal rights activist, now faces a 90-day jail sentence and two years of probation, simply because she chose to save chickens from inhumane conditions.

Zoe saved 4 chickens, poppy, aster, ivy, and azalea from Perdue’s Petaluma poultry slaughter house. They were covered in scratches and bruises and infested with coccidia parasites. At trial, Zoe was open and honest about what she did to get them the care they needed.

Zoe has stated with her complex health issues, even a short stay in jail could be dangerous for her. The judge barred her from even applying for detention alternatives. It’s up to us to get her the help she needs.

Lives of sentient beings should matter, yet in our justice system, the act of saving lives is paradoxically punished. Zoe took action where many others have hesitated. Her actions drew attention to the harsh realities of animal farming, something we can't afford to ignore. Yet for her bravery, she now has a criminal record which will blemish her opportunities and deter her future prospects.

Our justice system is meant to protect the innocent and vulnerable. Instead, it is vilifying a young woman whose only 'crime' was to act from a place of empathy and protect lives that cannot protect themselves. Real criminals roam free, and many offenses far graver than acts of kindness receive lighter or no consequences. Is this the justice we aspire to in our society?

We urge law enforcement and judicial authorities to reconsider this decision and recognize the moral courage Zoe demonstrated. There is a pressing need to change how we legally perceive actions driven by compassion. By signing this petition, you voice your support for reforming the judicial treatment of activism oriented towards animal rights and environmental awareness.

Help us keep Zoe Rosenberg out of jail. Let's defend those who defend others and ensure that our justice system reflects humane values. Your signature counts. Show Zoe, and many like her, that their efforts are honored and valued. Please sign and support a more compassionate approach to justice.
