Schwerin appeal ¦ cross-alliance and cross-party
We stand together!
For responsibility, empathy and solidarity in dealing with COVID19
Dear fellows in Schwerin and the West-Mecklenburg region, and generally in northern Germany,
the corona pandemic has required significant restrictions in our personal and professional lives from all of us for over two years. In an act of unprecedented solidarity, people are showing consideration for each other to protect themselves and others. They accept restrictions out of the insight that they are necessary and in solidarity with their families, their circles of friends and acquaintances, for their fellow human beings in the neighborhood and at work. They show every day that cohesion and mutual protection are important to them.
These people need a public voice. With this call, we want to strengthen people who behave considerately and responsibly and express our solidarity and gratitude for everyone who deals with the pandemic and its consequences every day in social, educational, medical and other everyday facilities. Together with them, we want to stand up for a democratic, open, strong and human rights-oriented and solidary society of free people, especially during the pandemic.
We are watching the demonstrations of the last few weeks with concern. The right of assembly applies and may of course also be exercised, especially in a constitutional democracy, to express criticism of state measures. But we have to realize that under the guise of criticism of the protective measures against Corona, right-wing extremist, anti-Semitic, conspiracy ideological, violent and anti-democratic forces are trying to divide our society. W e d o n o t agree with demonstrations that also give space to extremists and that are accompanied by open hatred in social networks and on the platforms of relevant messenger services. The spread of misinformation and conspiracy tales, the deliberate disregard of rules of respectful interaction in public space, right up to threats and open violence against people who work in medicine, science, administration, politics, media, art and culture creates a climate of intolerance and hate.
The signatories to the Schwerin appeal stand for peaceful and respectful mutual interaction, for coexistence in which neither violence, distrust, nor fear and hatred are sown among people.
We resolutely oppose the attempt to misuse criticism of protective measures and individual fears and worries to attack democracy and social cohesion! As different as our individual opinions may be, we are united in our position: As democrats, we stand together!
