Change unfair dress code at Zia
The Issue
In school girls and boys are subject to unfair, discriminatory , and inhumane treatment because of what they wear, live and who they are. To stop this action we can go one at a time starting with the dress code. The rules teach young mailable women that it is not okay to dress freely without being “provocative”. By ruling that stomachs and thighs are bad things to be seen, dress codes teach girls that their bodies are objects and that they are distractions. It also teaches men that they can get away with sexualizing women by calling it “being distracted” by her bra straps, Laura Bates from TIME Magazine said, “It teaches our children that girls’ bodies are dangerous, powerful and sexualized and that boys are biologically programmed to objectify and harass them.” When we are teaching the dress code we are also increasing rape. It promotes that it is the girls that have to “cover up” and protect themselves from men when the men should be the ones being thought not to rape, would you give all the women in the world cut-resistant shirts or take away the knifes from the men?
The dress code rules are targeted more towards young females in the school environment than male students “no short skirts or ripped jeans”. Lastly, it takes away time from young women who are learning by sending them home, it teaches that boys getting “distracted” and not getting his education because of her bare shoulders, is more important than the girls getting an education. This mindset is horrible and lowers self-esteem to the point of depression or suicide. https://cwuobserver.com/17945/opinion/6-reasons-why-i-hate-dress-codes/
