Dear Randwick City Council,

I first moved to Clovelly 15 years ago.  I wanted to thank council for the many steps they have taken to make Clovelly more walkable in that time.  The changes - adding in traffic islands on Clovelly Road, adjusting the zebra crossing at Fern and Clovelly Road, and the maintenance of the sidewalks - have all made a huge difference.  I now have three children, two at Clovelly Public School and our walks to and from are a lovely part of our day and have helped us get to know our neighbours.

I am writing to request that you consider adding in a zebra crossing in three locations:

1.     At Clovelly Road and Mundarrah Street;

2.     At Boundary Road and Winchester Road (both where there are currently traffic islands); and

3.     At Greville Street and Arden Street.

When discussing parental concerns about their children being able to walk to school safely, these locations are consistently mentioned as significant roads of concern. Parents who would otherwise walk, or allow their children to ride bicycles, are prevented because of concerns around crossings at these intersections.  These proposals would directly affect the walkability of comutes to at least three child care centres (Clovelly Child Care, Everlearn and Roly Poly) and two primary schools (Clovelly Public School and Saint Anthony’s Catholic Primary School), and multiple, parks, businesses and beaches.

Clovelly Road is a major thoroughfare; however this proposed crossing is at the end of the road and should not affect traffic flow significantly, slowing cars down just prior to reaching the beach.

The location of the Boundary Street crossing at Winchester was chosen in consultation with Clovelly Public School.  It is closest to the school entry gate with the longest open window during before and after school activities (Inverness Street).

I believe adding zebra crossings in these locations would further increase the walkability, and sense of community, in Randwick Council.  Thank you for your consideration.
