Pave the "trail" out of Yulee High School as a turn lane to allow better traffic flow.
The Issue
For years getting out of the Yulee High School parking lot has been a hassle to students AND parents alike. It discourages parents from wanting to take their children to school knowing they will have to wait in a line for at least 15-20 minutes before finally getting to the road. After school the problem is further extended causing students who live only a few miles away to have to wait upwards of an hour to get home after school lets out. This problem is caused by two things primarily, the terrible traffic guidance, but mainly the lack of a sufficient turn lane to guide traffic either way down Miner Road. The obvious solution is to pave the "trail" or for those who don't know the slang, the sand next to the only road in and out of the high school. Students who decide to use the trail as it sits run the risks of getting tickets and their ability to park on campus revoked. These tickets can be a pretty hefty fine and do nothing but add to the people in the line of traffic out. This issue could easily be solved by the school board or even the county using the money made from these tickets. By paving this stretch of sand with asphalt and making it a usable road people turning right onto Miner Road could easily accomplish their goal rather than have to wait till the last 30 or so feet before being able to turn, making the traffic back up rather than just going down their turn lane and allowing traffic going left to not have to be backed up by those waiting to turn right. It is not an impossible feat or an expensive one even and will also help many students and parents save not only time, but points on their license, money from ridiculous tickets, and destruction to their vehicles caused by the deterrents put in place in past years such as concrete barriers buried in the sand that do nothing but cause damage to the innocent people's vehicles. When I suggested this idea to the school's new resource officer during a class meeting, I was met with a harsh tone asking if I had the tax money to pay for this and if I wanted to pay for it myself. So I've decided to look to the others in my community for support on this idea, so that we can hopefully make it a reality and help many students and parents make it where they need to go on time after school lets out.
