Hello, the reason why you are receiving this email/update is because since despite being an American myself, I am strongly against the Australia's Online Safety Amendment 2024 along with the UK's Online Safety Act 2023, I have found out why they are passing that widely-hated law that will require you to use an ID to have social media. I have made an petition against Jonathan Haidt's "The Anxious Generation" book, while a success in sales, has been criticized by some for causing the new era of 1984-styled age verifications. Australia's dystopian social media ban is also the exact reason why YouTube is being banned in that country for under 16s, which makes no sense. The petition is right here: https://www.change.org/p/tell-publishers-permanently-discontinue-and-remove-jonathan-haidt-s-books/
We are not supporting or reading books that support age verifications, or censorship. That book was only made to support censorship, not protect the mental health of the youth.
While we do want to protect children's mental health, we need to find better ways to actually protect children. If you are against Haidt for causing Australia to pass their 16+ social media ban that is unconstitutional and requires ID requirements, we need his books to stop being sold in stores, to keep the Internet free and sound. Even NetChoice would likely hate that book. Let's not support social media bans; Let's teach young teens to use the Internet wisely. We do not want YouTube banned for under 16s in Australia because it can be an educational tool for kids.
And by the way, DO NOT READ HAIDT'S BOOK. It was only made to spread censorship and propaganda and cause Australia to pass their 16+ ban on YouTube. I'd recommend Behind their Screens (another book by a different author) instead. It has the same topic, but it doesn't advocate for age verification/bans/censorship, it advocates for responsible social media usage.
And keep in mind that I do have a petition against Australia's Online Safety Amendment 2024, which is a censorship law that would require everyone to give out their ID/face to access social media. That's not safety, that's censorship.
Anyways, thank you for signing, and I hope that you can sign! We don't want censorship; we want safety. While concerns around mental health are valid, we shouldn't force age verifications.
And the true problem isn't social media or smartphones themselves; the true problem is that some parents introduce their kids to them at an early age, when they should be introducing them to the Internet in the tween years.
