The YHA NZ National Board are refusing to listen to their members and work with them to jointly assess the challenges at the Opoutere Youth Hostel and formulate a way for this iconic and unique New Zealand haven to be protected and stay as one of the heritage hostels within New Zealand Network.
Members presented to the board in May and as a result of the presentation and an application from the presenters to form a group with in the YHA according to its constitution were accepted by the board as a legitimate group within the youth hostel Association.
Each one of these groups has to have a purpose that is accepted by the board. This group's purpose is "to ensure the continued operation of the Opoutere hostel within the YHA network to promote its use and support its operation and longevity by the investigation of all probable means and subsequent deployment of such appropriate means found"
At the August meeting (3 months after the approval should have been given) the board approved this group and its purpose they also announced the closure of the hostel to be effective in Easter 2018. They have failed to explain how these two diametrically opposed resolutions could be passed in the same meeting despite being asked on many occasions. The previous national chair when asked why the group had not been approved at the meeting in May said that he felt that if the group was approved and then the hostel was closed it would be a "slap in the face to the group".......
At the annual general meeting of the Youth Hostel Association held in Wellington on 28th of October following two motions were passed.
"That the YHA National board shall recognise the Opoutere hostel group and consult with them fully in any decisions regarding the future of the Opoutre YHA hostel" ( this one passed with no dissent or abstentions)
"That the YHA National board shall defer the decision regarding the future of appropriate hostel for 12 months to enable fully informed consultation amongst all interested parties". (Carried by 63% of the votes)
The national chair then announced that he only considered these two motions to be "information" and that the board of this 85-year-old registered charity was not bound to follow the direction of its members, even though its they have passed a motion at its annual general meeting directing the board so to do.
Without due consultation with the members group the board and CEO decided to close the hostel. CEO has admitted that he has not even done a break-even budget to find out what would be required to keep it open. And he is now holding secret negotiations to gift hundreds of thousands of dollars of YHA assets to an unknown group with an unknown purpose and is failing to divulge any of this information to the group now sanctioned to work with the board.
So the fight to save this location and community is now ramping up please sign this petition and get anybody you can who loves this place to help. Place comments as they all add to the energy of the group who are determined not to fail in preserving this unique haven.
