Water Lily Paper: Innovative Project For Pateros’ Livelihood

Water Lily Paper: Innovative Project For Pateros’ Livelihood
The Issue
This plant is astonishingly invasive and commonly found in tropical countries like the Philippines. Water lilies are considered pests due to its fast growing population that causes aquatic animals such as fishes to die due to reduction of light penetration. This is the reason why fishes are not alive anymore in the river of Pateros. Another impact of having uncontrolled numbers of water hyacinth is that, it increases evapotranspiration well thus causing great water loss to dams and reservoir. Crowding of these water lilies will lessen the access of human beings to the river for their domestic use such as transportation, fishing which makes the water unsuitable for any human use. This plant builds “mats” if they occupied the whole surface of a river. This mat provides shelter for dangerous animals like snakes and crocodiles. It is also a good place for disease carrying insects to breed in the place. Water lily invasion is a big problem in a community indeed.
The growth of water hyacinth or water lilies is a sign of a polluted environment. The presence of water lily in the Pateros’ river is quite visible. Therefore, the community of Pateros is polluted. Now it is our time to somehow resolve this environmental problem. Yes, government do try to take action of this environmental issue yet our organization is to make us of these water lilies into something useful. As we researched, we found out that water lilies can also be recycled into something useful. We plan not just to recycle but to innovate to create living for our fellow Pateros citizen. Undergoing a lot of research, we have found out another way to make these lilies into fund that could sustain family needs within our community.
In Bangladesh, they use water hyacinth to make paper and ropes as well. Good thing about it, there is less production cost. Resources in creating these products can be found in the environment (in the river to be exact). In creating a paper an old paper pulp and shredded water lilies could do. With guarantee, this paper product is high quality than other paper. Due to its tested strength and durability to regular paper, it could also be developed into paper cups and plates used for parties and other events. Another product that could be innovated with the use of water lilies is rope. Fibers of water lilies are naturally sturdy without the need of machineries. This could be one of Pateros' signature product, aligned with balut and alfombra. We propose this not only to save the environment but to also profit from our town’s considered main environmental issue. Our organization hopes that the government will also accept and sign this campaign for the betterment not only of the environment but also for the citizen’s living.
