Your Signature Can Help Prevent an Unnecessary Tragedy
The Issue
Hillcrest Road is a residential street near two playgrounds and home to several children with disabilities, many of whom elope. Despite existing warning signs, including signs alerting drivers that deaf children are nearby, cars, quads, and gas-powered drift trikes continue traveling at dangerous speeds, especially during warmer months when most children are outdoors.
We, the undersigned residents, concerned community members, and Americans nationwide who believe protecting children requires action, request immediate traffic-calming measures, including a speed bump or equally effective device on Hillcrest Road.
Officials have indicated that existing signage is sufficient. But signs are not slowing traffic, and hoping drivers will someday pay attention is not a safety plan.
Pennsylvania has already seen what can happen when safety concerns precede tragedy.
West View Borough: Before a fatal 2011 motorcycle crash on Bellevue Avenue, a neighbor had specifically urged the borough to install a stop sign. Other residents had also raised concerns about the dangerous intersection. Warning signs were installed after the death.
Branchton Road, Butler County: After a 2003 crash killed a family of five, a flashing warning light was installed. Subsequently, 660 residents signed a petition seeking a traffic light.
Dravosburg: After a 2023 school van crash killed 15-year-old Samantha Kalkbrenner, officials pursued safety changes along Richland Avenue, and a traffic signal was installed at Richland Avenue and Fifth Street in 2024.
These incidents are reminders that safety concerns deserve serious attention before lives are lost, not after. Hillcrest Road should not need its own tragedy to justify preventive action.
We respectfully ask officials to:
-Install a speed bump or other effective traffic-calming device.
-Review existing signage and add pavement markings or additional warnings if needed.
-Provide residents with a written response and a timeline for action.
Children should be able to play, walk, ride their bikes, and enjoy nearby playgrounds without facing unnecessary danger. Families should not have to wait for a preventable tragedy before their safety concerns are taken seriously.
Slow down. Protect our children. Make Hillcrest Road safer.
By signing this petition, we urge the appropriate authorities to take prompt, meaningful action to protect children, pedestrians, residents, and pets.
Requested action: Install a speed bump or an equally effective traffic-calming measure on Hillcrest Road.
