The Issue

We are asking for your support in changing policies in York Region District School Board. York Region District School Board does not have a clear policy stating transgender, gender fluid and gender neutral people may access their gender lived bathrooms, and so some trans students are told they may only use the bathroom corresponding to their biological sex, or the all access bathrooms. Transgender/ gender fluid/ gender neutral people should have the right to use their gender lived bathroom. This is already done in The City of Toronto whose current policy is that people are permitted to use the bathroom that corresponds to their expressed gender identity. As stated in the Ontario Human Rights Code (13.4.1) and the Canadian Human Rights Code (Bill C-16), denying people access to their gender lived bathroom is a violation. Contradicting these rights can be extremely harmful to transgender, gender fluid, and gender neutral people. For example, they can get gender dysphoria, which can be extremely harmful. Gender dysphoria is a term that describes a sense of unease that a person may have because of a mismatch between their biological sex and their gender identity. This sense of unease or dissatisfaction may be so intense it can lead to depression and anxiety and have a harmful impact on daily life. Therefore we believe that it is important that York Region District School Board respects the rights of transgender/gender fluid/gender neutral people and provides clear direction in their policy to support those rights. We hope to reach at least 500 signatures. Please support this change by signing this petition.
