The Ambedkar Memorial in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow is 107 acres of stone. Just stone! That should send a wake up call to each and every member of the city who has to bear or has borne the blistering heat of 45 degrees centigrade in the summer months, when a battle between man and sun rages on for 9 out of the 12 months of the year.

My petition comes in the light of the recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a function of the United Nations, which claims that current measures by governments to contain global warming within 1.5 degrees are NOT ENOUGH and if the current lackadaisical approach to climate conservation continues we could be looking at a 2 degree rise in global temperature as well. The report urges countries to take an aggressive stance for afforestation and essentially sets a deadline for the year 2030 for nations to do everything they possibly can to prevent their planet from becoming inhospitable for future generations.

India and other South Asian nations are particularly susceptible to the heat wave that is predicted in the report. I do not need to emphasize the plight of the common man and underprivileged section of society that has faced several heat waves in Uttar Pradesh. The rapid transformation of Lucknow and unabated reduction in the green cover of the city over the past decades has done nothing to ease the brunt of heat. More so, it is the common man, the everyday rickshaw puller, street hawker, laborer and cyclist who is most troubled by the phenomenon.

In light of the above evidence I propose that the government begin the work of plantation in the Ambedkar Memorial that has been built in the heart of the city. Imagine the amount of oxygen, shade and water retention benefits that can be reaped with such plantation. It goes without saying that this could hurt the sentiments of a certain political faction, but it is after all for the benefit of 'Bahujan Samaj'. It is not the middle class or upper middle class people, who spend most of their time in air conditioning, but it is the very section of people that the stone memorial seeks to represent who are affected by the intolerable heat of the city.

The government should consider this with immediate priority since it is only now that we can take some sort of action for preservation of the environment. I hope the people's representative Chief Minister Shri Yogi Adityanath lends an ear to this proposal, after all he is the beacon of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, the very party whose leader Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was recently awarded the United Nations 'Champions of Earth'  award.

The time to act is now, not lament over the mistakes of yesterday nor pass the buck to look for some future government to take initiative. It is now!
