Allow more court/time for Badminton players @ YMCA Quincy, MA

The Issue

With players increasing at the Y, Quincy MA, we need more time or court allocated for badminton. We have been experiencing longer wait times for playing on a regular basis now.

Badminton players at the Quincy YMCA have continually reached out to YMCA administrative staff seeking more attention to the badminton program. A couple years ago, one of our regular badminton player spoke directly with the Program Director, Tom, who said that he was considering a badminton club Sundays after hours. After that conversation, we never heard from Tom again about that club. The badminton program is, in general, overlooked. The tape lines that define the court are worn off, and a re-taping is long overdue. Every single racket the YMCA provides is broken. Staff members on Wednesdays and Sundays generally don't raise the basketball hoops all the way up, and the hoops can get in the way.

Our main frustration with the Quincy YMCA is that we have given feedback to YMCA staff several times over the years about the long wait times between games and the very limited number of hours per week badminton is offered (4.5 hours per week). The YMCA program director has always assured and maintained that they are considering options, when, in reality, we get the sense that they tell us things to appease us temporarily, but never intend to make any changes to the program and hope we just move on.

Quincy is a diverse city with a large and growing Asian population. Badminton is one of the more popular sports across all of Asia. We feel as though the YMCA has been missing out on a huge opportunity to engage the various ethnic communities in Quincy and increase/diversify its membership by promoting and expanding the badminton program within the community.

We would like to see a serious attempt at gathering member feedback and improving the program. A good start is to increase badminton availability during the week and/or add a third net.
