Stop Yellowstone National Park from slaughtering bison, before it's too late!
The Issue
Right now Yellowstone National Park is arranging and carrying out plans to capture and slaughter many bison in park boundaries, claiming they are trying to control the cattle disease brucellosis. There have been no reported cases of brucellosis in bison to cattle transmission, and elk carry the disease as well. Elk are allowed to freely roam without prompt to kill them, as they are with bison. Since 1980 this irrational "concern" over brucellosis has provoked the killing of over 8,200 buffalo, and in the late 1800's they nearly went extinct from over hunting until conservationists such as Theodore Roosevelt intervened when there were only a few dozen left. The state of Montana was responsible for killing over 1,000 bison last year alone. There are plans to slaughter at least a hundred more that will be captured in the park with within the next few days. The park is emphasizing killing the bison outside of the park as well to local hunters, contributing to over 400 buffalo killed this winter outside of park lines. We've already saved the Buffalo once, and we can do it again. These animals are sacred to this land and once were treated with such respect that the natives to the territory held celebrations in thanks for abundance and promised in the festivities that they would not over hunt them. They have expressed their deep concerns only to be ignored and held ceremonies to pray for the killings to stop, only to hear them being killed across state lines. Yellowstone needs to allow these buffalo to roam in their native habitat and a place of conservation as federally created, and stop provoking extinction of the last free roam herds, as over 70% of all bison in North America are farmed on private and state lands. Many other animals actually will infect cattle with brucellosis and are not being controlled as heavily, if at all, but there are virtually no cases of bison to cattle transmitability, as there are elk. Please help me save these beautiful creatures from their declining population as there naturally used to be around 30-40 million bison in north America, dropping to the current status of only 20,000 free roaming total and 4,900 of them recorded to be in Yellowstone on last count at the park. They plan to slaughter around 600-900 this year, clearly indicating the ratio of slaughtered to living buffalo and how few years it would take to kill most of them at the current status. The park is in ordnance with regulations Montana has passed to keep the wild bison population increasingly low, but the park is a land for conservation as much as tourism, and they are actually one of the main reasons that over a million people visit the park each year. Stop slaughtering the Buffalo and promoting over hunting outside of park boundaries.
