Yale-NUS: The Chair of your Governing Board is in business with war criminals in Myanmar.

After attempting to seize power in a bloody and illegal coup on February 1, 2021, the Myanmar military has deliberately slaughtered hundreds of people, including children, and has arrested and tortured thousands. The military’s spiralling levels of brutality is part of its history of committing atrocities against religious and ethnic minorities with total impunity.

The military’s crimes are enabled by its international network of businesses. This includes a lucrative real estate empire with high-profile international developers like Yale-NUS Chair Kay Kouk Oon Kwong. 

Kay Kuok Oon Kwong is a director of the project company for Myanmar’s Sule Square mall and office complex, which opened in October 2017, on land leased from the quartermaster general of the Myanmar army, the office in charge of purchasing the weapons used in the military’s crimes.

Sule Square’s opening coincided with the military’s genocide against the Rohingya, which involved mass killings, gang rape and drove more than 800,000 people to Bangladesh, wiping out villages and creating a system of apartheid.

By doing business with the Myanmar army, Kay Kuok Oon Kwong is complicit in the military’s international crimes and the continuing terror the military is inflicting on the Myanmar people.

We call on Yale-NUS College to immediately take action against Kay Kuok Oon Kwong for her continued business with the Myanmar army. If she remains Chair of the Governing Board, it sends a message that Yale-NUS tolerates her business with criminals.

Give Yale-NUS College an ultimatum: Remove Kay Kuok Oon Kwong from the Yale-NUS board unless she immediately ends her business with the Myanmar army.
