Batu Ferringhi residents started this petition to YAB Lim Guan Eng (Chief Minister of Penang) and

Penang Island is one of the favourite destinations for tourists as well as visitors from other states in Malaysia.  It has also recently been lauded in the Huffington Post as a top destination for foreigners seeking a tranquil, safe, clean and green place to retire.  The island is known as ‘The Pearl of the Orient’, but recent developments in Batu Ferringhi, the top tourist area in Penang Island, point in a highly disturbing and frightening new direction.

A proposal submitted to the local town council (MPPP) has revealed that a developer is planning to develop a 32.7 acre parcel of land opposite the Lone Pine Hotel.  Once completed, this development will consist of 7 high rise buildings that include a shopping plaza, a 368 bed hotel, service apartments, condominiums and low/medium cost apartments.  In total this project will create more than 1400 residential units.

We urge the Penang government and all those involved in approving this project to first consider the infrastructure in Batu Ferringhi before approving such huge projects.  The existing single road link, water supply and sewerage system, etc. are all already overstretched, and will not be able to support the thousands of new residents from this huge project as well as other developments planned for the north coast of Penang.  Also, emergency services such as hospitals and fire department facilities need to be readily available if such a project is undertaken.  Such services are currently not available in Batu Ferringhi.

The proposal is currently pending approval at MPPP.  Once approved, it will be built in phases, with Phase 1 involving the construction of the 38 storey low/medium cost apartment and 48 storey medium cost apartment.  Upon completion of Phase 1, Batu Ferringhi will look like the photo in this petition.

Once constructed, these sky-high buildings located in the middle of Batu Ferringhi will be visible to all tourists, visitors and residents alike.  They will inevitably become the iconic (albeit ugly) landmarks of Batu Ferringhi.  The 38 storey low/medium cost apartment has the potential to turn into an urban slum if not managed and maintained properly.

Please sign and share this petition to urge the Penang government to seriously consider all the above factors and the impact that it will have on tourism, the community (present and future) and the environment before approving this and future development projects.  Please help us to save the charm and beauty of Batu Ferringhi before it gets destroyed.
