Wynne and Tory: say no to the $93 fare hike, yes to more TTC service

Yesterday, City Hall listened to your emails, calls, and more and promised to increase service. We could soon see a restoration of service cut in 2011, 10 minutes or better service on key routes, more service on the Yonge line, less overcrowding, and more. Also, soon kids under 13 will ride the TTC for free.
This is looking like a big bold step towards alleviating the sardine crush we experience on the TTC.
Now the bad news. Mayor John Tory broke his election promise to freeze fares in 2015. TTC riders are being asked to accept a 3.7% fare hike (that’s about $93 a year) to raise $43 million of the $95 million needed to pay for these important service improvements.
That’s not fair.
It’s not fair because hiking fares is the most unfair way to pay for transit because it hurts the poor the most.
It’s not fair because we already pay our fair share. Riders pay a higher percentage of the TTC’s costs compared to riders in all other big North American transit systems.
It’s not fair because we all benefit from great transit, including drivers and the environment. But only riders are shouldering a 3.7% fare hike.
We call on Kathleen Wynne to fairly fund the TTC so we can have better service and no fare increase. Kathleen Wynne, you're the transit mayor: meet Tory's promise and match the city's funding to the TTC.
We also call on City Hall to fund the TTC with more progressive revenue tools so it’s not just riders that shoulder an unfair 3.7% fare hike.
The TTC budget is being finalized in the next four weeks.
Send your message now and tell City Hall and Queen's Park that in 2015 riders deserve more.
