If Wyndham ran its hotels, resorts, and vacation rentals the way its egg suppliers run their factory farms, they would be filthy, small, overcrowded, and unsafe. Wyndham Hotels & Resorts and Wyndham Destinations have a dark secret. Millions of egg-laying hens throughout Wyndham’s global supply chain suffer in cruel cages.
A caged hen will spend her life inside a cramped wire cage where she is unable to perform the most basic of natural behaviours. With a living space little more than the size of an A4 piece of paper, she cannot move around freely, properly flap her wings, feel the earth under her feet or breathe fresh air.
She will stand on sloped metal bars, in a crowded cage filled with other frustrated hens until she is ‘spent’ and can no longer lay enough eggs to be of value to the farmer.
A short life of suffering is all a caged hen will ever know.
Hundreds of companies around the world are ditching cages. Global commitments to go cage-free are being made by some of the largest companies in the world, including Marriott International, Accor Hotels, InterContinental Hotels, Hilton Hotels, Best Western, Unilever, Nestle, Starbucks, Aramark, Sodexo, Mondelez, and Compass Group. Many of Wyndham’s competitors have moved away from this horrible practice.
Wyndham has recognised that cages are cruel and outdated. In 2017, Wyndham published a global cage-free egg commitment pledging to phase out the use of cage eggs across all of its hotels and brands by 2025.
It has come to the attention of animal protection organisations worldwide that the hotel company has quietly removed all traces of its cage-free policy without explanation. Dozens of organisations, including SAFE, have reached out to Wyndham asking why its global cage-free commitment has mysteriously disappeared, yet Wyndham refuses to respond.
Wyndham has shamefully broken its commitment to ditching cruel cage eggs.
Wyndham Destinations says: “we believe in hospitality with heart.” Wyndham Hotels and Resorts proudly states: “we hold ourselves to the highest standards. We’re responsible, truthful and transparent. We do the right thing...we honour our commitments.” It’s time for Wyndham to take their words seriously; to do the right thing, act transparently, and show compassion to millions of animals that are suffering. It’s time to follow through on their commitment and work to meet basic animal welfare standards. It’s time for all of Wyndham’s brands to make good on the promise to finally go 100% cage-free globally.
The major hotel company boasts 20 brands in 8,400 locations across 80 countries. Ten of Wyndham’s hotels, many of which operate under the brand Ramada, can be found here in New Zealand. It is completely unacceptable for this industry leader to brush its corporate responsibilities under the rug. Kiwis will not stand by and let Wyndham continue to profit from the unbearable suffering endured by caged hens.
