This petition is to officially request Girls Wrestling and Boys Powerlifting be added to the high school curriculum for the 2022 - 2023 school year for Wylie Independent School District. Currently Wylie ISD does not offer Girls Wresting or Boys Powerlifting to the student body attending Wylie High School or Wylie East High School.

Wylie High School is the only program in District 6: Region 2 not to offer a Girls Wrestling program to students. Plano West Senior High, Plano East Senior High, Plano Senior High, Allen High School, McKinney, McKinney Boyd, Prosper, Little Elm and Coppell High Schools include girls wrestling as an athletic program according to the Texas University Interscholastic League (UIL).

Of the 152 active wrestling programs for Texas 6A wrestling, WHS is one of three programs currently not offering girls wrestling to their student body which includes Wylie High School, Dallas Jesuit and Houston Strake Jesuit; however, it would be remiss not to acknowledge Dallas Jesuit and Houston Strake Jesuit are private schools and enroll an all-male student body.  

Similar to WHS, Wylie East High School is one of two programs to not offer girls wrestling in Region 3, District 9. Carrollton Creekview, Carrollton Smith, Carrollton Turner, Lucas HS, Lovejoy HS, McKinney North HS, Princeton HS, Anna HS, Melissa HS, Gunter HS, and Whitesboro HS offers girls wrestling. Highland Park is the only other school to not offer girls Wrestling in the same district as Wylie East.  

As with Texas 6A, of the 201 active programs in Texas 5A, Wylie East Senior High is one of five programs not offering girls wrestling. These other programs include Boys Ranch HS, Pittsburg HS, Argyle HS, and as previously mentioned Highland Park High School. 

In regards to Boys Powerlifting, there are 201 active programs according to the Texas High School Powerlifting Association, and neither Wylie nor Wylie East are listed. Currently Girls powerlifting is offered both at WHS and WEHS representing Wylie ISD in regional and state tournaments. High schools local to Wylie ISD offering boys powerlifting include Bishop Lynch, Carrollton Creekview, R.L. Turner HS, Berkner HS, Lake Highlands HS, South Garland HS, as well as Frisco High Schools, Lucas Lovejoy, McKinney HS, and McKinney North to name a few.  

We contend including both Girls Wrestling and Boys Powerlifting to the student body of both Wylie High School and Wylie East High School will allow athletes to follow the sport of their choosing. Additionally, this will demonstrate to the community Wylie ISD is recognizing the need to be progressive with their athletics program, and taking a proactive and inclusive approach to high school sports will serve to strengthen and support the student athletes of Wylie High School and Wylie East High School.
