Save Carlisle Climbing Wall

The Sands Centre in Carlisle is going to be refurbished next year with a planned  £26m. The current climbing wall is going to be demolished and there are no plans to replace it within the new build.

This will be a huge loss to the City and to the ever growing climbing community. Plenty of children and adults attend the current climbing courses.

It is a popular 8m lead wall as it is the only lead wall within the local area, providing lead climbing to the climbers of Cumbria and those living in the Border communities. ( 100 mile round trip to Kendal or 120 miles to Newcastle being the nearest other large lead wall).

It is currently open to the public 7 days a week and offers after school climbing sessions for both children and adults, which continue to be very popular and have run for over 25 years.

Carlisle will then become one of the only cities in the country not to have a lead climbing wall. The new development is a prime opportunity for the City of Carlisle to build a new wall.

Pros for new wall include:

Current kids classes Mon 4.30 - 6.30. Tues 4.30 - 6.30, 6.30 - 8.30. Wed 4.30 - 6.30, 6.30 -8.30. Sat 10.30 - 12.30 ×10

Adult sessions Mon 6.30 - 8.30 ×12

1000s of local climbers, this is Cumbria, The home of British Rock Climbing!

Many local Mountaineering clubs: Carlisle MC, Eden Valley MC, Dumfries MC, Keswick MC.

Location - attracting climbers from Cumbria and the Border regions, Scotland and Northumberland, including washed out, Lakeland climbers on their way home!

Competition opportunities: The North West Youth Climbing Series (YCS) currently have rounds at Manchester, Kendal, Newcastle and Edinburgh.

Eden Rock, a bouldering centre in Carlisle, open now for 6 years. A great success story (they have opened another wall in Edinburgh 2018) with thousands of members so providing a wealth base of climbers new and old. This is bouldering only though, no ropes and only 4m above matting.

Climbing is going to be in the 2020 Olympics. Lets get more children active.

Lily Kinnersley and Kai Main both from Carlisle have recently made it onto the British Climbing Team, Lily coming 5th in a European climbing competition at Imst in Austria, with kai placing in the top 10. We have lots of local talent that have to travel miles to climb and train.

Student population with current Outdoor courses running.  A dozen children have completed climbing courses for their GCSE.

So please help by signing this petition and lets get together and save our wall or better yet, get a new modern wall for the City of Carlisle and provide climbing once more for the community.

Many Thanks
