The Sands Centre in Carlisle is going to be refurbished next year 2019. The current climbing wall is going to be demolished and there are no plans to replace it within the new build.
This will be a huge loss to the City and to the ever growing climbing community.
It is a popular wall as it is the only lead wall within the local area, providing lead climbing to the climbers of Cumbria and those living in the Boarder communities. ( 50 miles to Kendal or 60 miles to Newcastle being the nearest other large lead wall).
It is currently open to the public 7 days a week and offers after school climbing sessions for both children and adults, which continue to be very popular and have run for over 25 years.
Carlisle will then become one of few cities in the country not to have a lead climbing wall and the new development is a prime opportunity for the City of Carlisle and the Sands Centre to build a new wall.
Pros for new wall include:
Location - attracting climbers from Cumbria and the Boarder regions, Scotland and Northumberland, including washed out, lakeland climbers on their way home!
Student population with current Outdoor courses running.
Competition opportunities: The North West Youth Climbing Series (YCS) currently have rounds at Manchester, Kendal, Newcastle and Edinburgh.
Eden Rock, a bouldering centre in Carlisle, open now for 4 years. A great success story (they have opened another wall in Edinburgh 2018) with thousands of members so providing a wealth base of climbers new and old.
Climbing is going to be in the 2020 Olympics. Lets get more children active.
A young Female Carlisle climber has recently made it onto the British Climbing Team, coming 5th in a European climbing competition at Imst in Austria, with a male placing in the top 10 from Longtown. We have lots of local talent that have to travel miles to climb and train.
So please help by signing this petition and lets get together and save our wall or better yet, get a new modern wall for the City of Carlisle and provide climbing once more for the community.
