The luchador mask is an important cultural symbol to many Chicano/a Latino/a students on the Washington State University campus. By taking this symbol and using it as a marketing gimmick the WSU Athletics marketing department is devaluing and decontextualizing a part of the Chicano/Latino cultural identity.

In signing our petition you will show the WSU Athletics department that cultural insensitivity is not a part of the world class values WSU holds as an institution for higher education. By coming together as a united front, the WSU community can show that our university is truly committed to diversity, multiculturalism, and acceptance.

With enough support from our Cougar community we can show the WSU Athletics department that handing out thousands of “Cougador” masks is culturally insensitive and unacceptable.
