My name is Robin, I am currently a CNA. In my every day work, I see neglect in some form by the CNA’s at nursing homes and memory care facilities. The most common targets of abuse are those that cannot speak for themselves. Elder abuse is classified as the mistreatment of anyone over the age of 60 and it can happen in many different forms. Passive Neglect is a CNA’s failure to provide an elderly person daily life necessities and care. Unscrupulous people like to take advantage of the elderly because they are generally easier targets.
Did you know:
- 50% of dementia patients experience abuse, with 15% of that being gross neglect.
- As much as 50-65% of elderly abuse comes from CNA’s
- 60% of all CNA’s have been abusive at some point in their career - 14% of CNA’s have self reported their abuse towards a patient
- 2 out of 3 CNA’s have been abusive
- Residents at nursing homes and memory care facilities are at a higher risk of being abused, primarily because they are not able to speak up for themselves.
- Dementia and Alzheimer’s patients are at a higher risk of abuse due to behavior out of their control being deemed uncooperative or combative.
So, how can you help? Be the voice of the vulnerable so that every patient has a voice and is heard. I’m Robin and I am on a mission to help get the laws changed. I hope you will share your voice and help me help the voiceless.
