“To halt and reverse the destruction of our environment” - WWF

Hi, my name is Sally Garrett and I am 15 years old. I believe that if we have Earth Hour once every three months we can make a difference to help stop global warming.

Earth Hour is a very valued hour of every year. It encourages companies and households to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change. Usually it happens once a year at the end of March for 1 hour between 7:30 – 8:30.

Each year more and more cities and towns participate in Earth Hour. If it happens once every three months and more people take part in it then more people will realize and learn. They will learn to see when electrical appliances aren’t needed as much. For instance instead of having the lights on for hours on end, all you need to do is open a window to let the sunlight do the job for you.

In 2011 more than 5,200 cities and towns, across 135 countries took part in Earth Hour. 400,000 kilowatts and over $23,000 were saved in Vietnam. Although having Earth Hour once a year doesn’t actually save much electricity at all, it is amazing to see how many people actually care. If Earth Hour happens once every 3 months then maybe it will make a change.
