Why this petition matters

Started by Trey Highton

As a professional world tour surfer and the defending world champion, Gabriel Medina has a contractual obligation to represent the sport of surfing with dignity at all times, most especially during contests.  Medina's post-heat interview, live-broadcast globally, at the 2015 Snapper Rocks event, in which he criticized Commissioner Kieran Pierrow and used profanity clearly violates Articles 170, 171, & 174 of the 2015 WSL Rule Book.

The WSL Rule Book states that violating articles 170 (Sportsmanlike Conduct) & 171 (Damage to Surfing's Image) each carry a fine between $1,000-$50,000 per violation, to be decided at the discretion of the WSL Disciplinary Committee.  Violating Article 174 (Verbal Assault) carries a mandatory fine of $1,000 for the first offense.

Similar offenses in the past have been met with both serious fines and suspensions by the former ASP Disciplinary Committee.  As of 3/16/15, no action has been announced or taken by the WSL against Medina.

We the undersigned, united global surf fans, demand the WSL uphold and enforce its own rules and policies by handing down a situationally appropriate punishment to Gabriel Medina.  To not enforce these policies would further erode the so-called professionalism of a sport that is intrinsically based on the aesthetic value judgements of a handful of 'experts.'
