Overturn Alesana Tuilagi Suspension

The Issue

Alesana Tuilangi has received a 5 match suspension for nothing more than running in to a opposing player who was attempting to tackle him in a manner that is recognized as dangerous to ones self.

During the recent International Rugby World Cup match between Samoa and Japan- The 34-year-old Samoa and Newcastle Falcons back struck Japan's Harumichi Tatekawa with his knee in the second minute of Samoa's Pool B defeat.

Tuialagi was running down edge of the field when Tatekawa attempted to bring him down. Tatekawa used incorrect technique in the tackle which as a consequence resulted in his head ending up on the wrong side and ultimately between his own body and the body of the person he was trying to tackle. The result was such that Tatekawa required some medical attention before continuing with the game.

World Rugby advise players to tackle by preparing for contact and adopting a body position that is strong, stable and low
To always position the head behind or to one side of the ball carrier - never position the head in front of the ball carrier.

Due to this advise not being followed by Tatekawa, the end result was what may appear from certain camera angles as Tatekawa making contact with Tuilagis knee. This is why you must have your head on the right side.

Tuilagi has been unjustly punished for nothing more than running whilst an opposing player has attempted to tackle him. The resulting award by the citing commission was greatly over exaggerating the incident and could quite possibly damage the sport of rugby in general. This punishment sends out the wrong message to everyone in rugby from grass roots right to the top level and could very well result in more injuries through players using incorrect tackling technique. World Rugby needs to address this citing immediately.
