يدعو حزب العيش والحرية (تحت التأسيس) الشعوب للتضامن مع حقوق الشعب المصري في مياه النيل، التي طالما كانت أحد أسباب الحياة لهذا الشعب عبر التاريخ. فرغم اعتراف مصر بحق أثيوبيا في التنمية واستغلال مياه النيل في ذلك وموافقتها على بناء سد النهضة بموجب إعلان المبادئ بشأن سد النهضة الأثيوبي الموقع ما بين مصر والسودان وأثيوبيا سنة 2015، فإن تعنت حكومة أثيوبيا أفشل المفاوضات حول قواعد ملء السد وتشغيله - جولة بعد أخرى - وأخرها جولة مفاوضات كينشاسا، وهو ما يعتبر تهديدًا للحقوق المصرية والسودانية في نهر النيل ويمثل خطرا وشيكا على الشعبين الواقعين بالفعل تحت خط الفقر المائي العالمي.

لقد أخلت الحكومة الأثيوبية بتعهداتها بموجب إعلان المبادئ، واستخفت بوساطة الاتحاد الأفريقي (الذي من أهدافه دعم السلام والأمن في القارة السمراء). وهو ما يفتح احتمالات اندلاع حروب المياه في شرق أفريقيا ويهدد السلم والأمن الدوليين، وهو ما تسعي كل الشعوب والقوي المؤيدة للسلام لتفاديه. ومن خلال التوقيع على هذه العريضة نأمل في تفادي العواقب الوخيمة التي قد تنتج عن اندلاع نزاع مسلح حول المياه والذي قد يكون سابقة خطيرة لا تهدد فحسب السلم والأمن في شرق أفريقيا، بل في العالم برمته، وتشجيع الحكومات ولا سيما حكومة أثيوبيا على التوصل لاتفاق ملزم يضمن الإدارة المشتركة لمياه نهر النيل وتحقيق التنمية المستدامة لدول المنبع والمصب على السواء.

The Bread and Freedom Party (Hizb AlEish WalHorria) calls on all peoples to stand in solidarity with the rights of the Egyptian people to the Nile River, which has always been vital for Egyptians throughout history. Despite Egypt's recognition of Ethiopia's right to development and the use of the water of the Nile River for developmental purposes pursuant to the Declaration of Principles on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) signed between Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia in 2015, the Ethiopian government’s intransigence has repeatedly thwarted negotiations over the rules of filling and operating the GERD, most recently in Kinshasa negotiations. This is considered a threat to Egyptian and Sudanese rights in the water of the Nile River and poses an imminent danger to the Egyptian and Sudanese peoples who are already below the global water poverty line.The Ethiopian government has violated its obligations under the Declaration of Principles and disregarded the African Union’s mediation (which aims to support peace and security in the African continent). This opens the possibility of the outbreak of water wars in East Africa, and threatens international peace and security, which is what all pro-peace forces and peoples seek to avoid. By signing this petition, we hope to prevent the dire consequences that may result from the occurrence of an armed conflict over water. Such conflict – if it takes place – will be a dangerous precedent that threatens not only peace and security in East Africa, but the entire world. We also hope to encourage governments, especially the Ethiopian government, to reach a binding agreement that guarantees the co-administration of the water of the Nile River and the achievement of sustainable development for both upstream and downstream countries.
